Sabotage of Water and Fire Protection Project in Klimatia, North Corfu
Corfu, May 29, 2026 – A vital water supply and fire protection project in the wider area of Klimatia, North Corfu, has been targeted by acts of sabotage, including cut pipes and orchestrated tensions. The Mayor of North Corfu, Giorgos Macheimaris, and the President of the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of North Corfu (DEYABK), Vassilis Salvanos, have issued a joint statement condemning these unacceptable actions.
The project is designed to transfer surplus water from Klimatia to supply the community of Nisaki, which faces severe water shortages. Additionally, it aims to enhance fire protection by creating hydrants and water intake points in a high-risk fire zone, thereby bolstering operational readiness against fire hazards and emergencies.
Despite responsible assurances from DEYABK that the local community of Klimatia would not be deprived of water, a few individuals have chosen to cultivate fear, misinformation, and tension. This has led to obstruction of work crews and, ultimately, acts of vandalism. The culmination of this unacceptable situation was the destruction of public property and the sabotage of the project at least ten different points along the pipeline.
In an era of climate crisis and water scarcity, it is incomprehensible that in 2026, water supply and civil protection projects are being sabotaged. While other communities in North Corfu, such as Loutses, Xanthates, Agioi Douloi, Lavki, and Chorepiskopi, demonstrate practical cooperation, solidarity, and responsibility, some continue to invest in tension, division, and outdated practices.
The cut pipes represent an act of undermining public interest and a blow against the citizens themselves. Society demands solutions, projects, and responsibility, not orchestrated tensions and sabotage. The Municipality and DEYABK will continue, with responsibility and determination, their monumental effort to reduce water supply problems, enhance fire protection, and strengthen the communities of the Municipality, from end to end.
