Corfu, March 8 – On Friday afternoon, March 7, 2026, a significant rally took place at the Messonghi junction in South Corfu, organized by the Corfu Labor Center. The protest aimed to draw attention to the critical and unacceptable state of public infrastructure in the region, which significantly impacts the quality of life for residents and hinders economic and social development.
Years of Neglect Lead to Widespread Problems
The Corfu Labor Center, responding to numerous requests from local workers, initiated the rally to address the severe issues faced by employees and other popular strata due to non-existent and dilapidated public infrastructure. The announcement from the Labor Center highlighted that the chronic neglect of provincial, municipal, and rural road networks, coupled with the absence of necessary drainage works and flood protection, has led to extensive road damage following prolonged rainfall. This has made passage problematic and dangerous.
The recent heavy rains have exacerbated the already problematic road network, with large quantities of water flowing into the sea due to a lack of water collection and storage projects. This situation is particularly critical given that the water supply network is described as a “sieve” and water facilities are outdated. This raises the risk of the area being permanently characterized as an emergency zone, alternately for floods, rainfall, or water shortages.
Impact on Education and Public Health
Beyond the road and water issues, the heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions have further exposed long-standing problems in school infrastructure. Collapsing roofs and water leaks in classrooms, along with other deficiencies, have brought to light all the construction defects and accumulated risks in the educational system. Despite written notifications to local and state authorities from educational bodies, these significant shortcomings and problems in the region’s schools have not prompted action from officials, as the resolution of educational issues is not considered a priority.
Adding to these concerns is the absence of necessary sports facilities, cultural expression infrastructure, and major deficiencies in public health sector infrastructure. These factors contribute to the understanding of why the general population of the area has decreased by approximately 20% over the last two decades. Anti-popular policies, the shrinking incomes of workers, self-employed individuals, and poor popular strata, combined with severe public infrastructure deficiencies, compel residents and youth to emigrate or to live in the area with a degraded quality of life.
Call for Unified Action and Funding
The degradation and abandonment of public infrastructure are attributed to the policies of governments and local administrations, which emanate from the EU. These policies consider any funding for popular needs as a cost and an ineligible expense, in contrast to subsidies, grants, tax breaks for business groups, and military spending.
The Labor Center, as a unified and unifying body for workers, views its primary mission as improving the position of workers, as well as allied popular strata, self-employed individuals, small business owners, small farmers, pensioners, and youth. The organization has taken the initiative to appeal to local popular bodies, unions, associations, and local government, urging them to decide on participation in a unified struggle. This struggle aims to demand the necessary funding and projects for the immediate restoration of existing problems and the construction of new public infrastructures that will fully cover popular needs without compromise.
The rally was called for Sunday, March 8, at 5:30 PM at the Messonghi junction. This event underscores the growing frustration among the local population regarding the persistent neglect of essential services and infrastructure.
