Hundreds of pensioners staged a rally in Kotzia Square, central Athens, today, December 15, organized by the Coordinating Committee of Cooperating Pensioner Organizations. The protest took place on the eve of the state budget vote scheduled for tomorrow, December 16, in the Hellenic Parliament.
Key Demands of the Pensioners
The pensioners’ primary demands include:
- Increases in all pensions, both main and supplementary.
- Legislative regulation and immediate payment of the 13th and 14th pensions.
- Abolition of the solidarity levy.
- Inclusion of pensioners in Social Tourism programs.
The demonstration, captured by Newsbomb’s camera, featured participants holding banners and placards and chanting slogans as they marched.
The March to the Ministry of Labor
The procession made its way to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, where the attendees presented their demands. During the rally, Athinas Street in front of the Athens City Hall was closed to traffic from Sofokleous Street to Omonia Square to accommodate the protestors.
Background to the Protest
This protest highlights the ongoing financial struggles faced by Greek pensioners, who have been significantly impacted by economic austerity measures and rising living costs. Their demands reflect a broader discontent with current pension policies and a call for improved living standards.
Impact on Public and Political Discourse
The timing of the protest, just before the parliamentary vote on the state budget, is strategic, aiming to exert pressure on lawmakers to address their concerns. The issue of pension adequacy remains a critical point of public and political debate in Greece, with various stakeholders advocating for different approaches to ensure the financial well-being of the elderly population. The government’s response to these demands, particularly in the context of the upcoming budget, will be closely watched by the public and pensioner organizations alike.
