Northern Corfu Residents Face “Shameless” Water Bill Charges
Corfu, March 20 – The Popular Rally of Northern Corfu (Laiki Syspeirosi Voreias Kerkyras) has released a statement denouncing what it describes as “shameless” and arbitrary charges on water bills issued by the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Northern Corfu (DEYAVK) for the July-August 2025 billing period. The organization is calling on residents to mobilize and demand the immediate reversal of these charges.
Arbitrary Billing Practices Spark Outcry
According to the statement, water bills recently sent to communities such as Agros, Kavvadades, and Drosato exhibit a peculiar uniformity. Regardless of actual consumption, all households, including closed residences and individual households, as well as warehouses, have been arbitrarily charged for 25 cubic meters of water, in addition to the fixed charge.
“It’s as if everyone’s bill came out of a carbon copy! Arbitrarily, on a whim, in addition to the fixed charge, DEYAVK of Northern Corfu ‘taxes’ everyone with 25 cubic meters of water – whether closed houses, individual households, or warehouses,” the Popular Rally statement reads.
Blame Game and Unaddressed Issues
The Popular Rally criticizes the municipal authority and the president of DEYAVK for consistently blaming small domestic users, claiming they “do not pay,” despite acknowledging that the largest debtors are hotels, luxury villas, and large businesses. The organization questions whether DEYAVK now intends to pass on the costs of winter damages to boreholes, reservoirs, and networks to these “usual suspects” – the small consumers.
Further compounding the issue, the Popular Rally highlights ongoing irregularities. Just a month prior, water meters were reportedly removed from Peroulades without any prior notification, with personnel entering private gardens without permission. Concurrently, many homes in Afionas have been without water for over a month.
Call for Collective Action
In response to these perceived injustices, the Popular Rally of Northern Corfu is urging residents to demand that DEYAVK retract these arbitrary charges. They advocate for public assemblies and organized collective action to ensure that residents are not once again forced to bear the brunt of these financial burdens.
The organization emphasizes that such practices are unacceptable and undermine the trust between the water company and the citizens it serves. The Popular Rally’s call to action seeks to empower residents to challenge these billing practices and ensure fair and transparent water management.
