North Corfu Municipality Addresses Education Concerns Amidst Allegations of Harassment
Corfu, January 27 – The North Corfu Municipality held a significant municipal council meeting on Friday, January 23, 2026, focusing on critical issues within the education sector. The meeting, which saw broad participation from various educational stakeholders, addressed concerns ranging from school infrastructure and transportation to funding and the quality of education. Notably, the Mayor of North Corfu, G. Macheimaris, issued a statement following the meeting that, while emphasizing his commitment to education, made no direct mention of recent allegations of harassment and bullying against educators and parents.
Extensive Participation and Key Discussions
The council meeting was convened with the primary agenda item being “Education issues in the Municipality of North Corfu (building, transport, operational, housing, quality of education).” The session featured a wide array of attendees, including:
- Mr. Ioannis Zikos, Health & Education Councillor for the Ionian Islands Regional Unit
- Mr. Aristotelis Vlasis, Director of Primary Education in Corfu
- Ms. Eleni I. Vousolinou, Director of Secondary Education in Corfu
- Ms. Aspasia Protopsalti, President of the Union of Parents & Guardians Associations of North Corfu Municipality
- Mr. Nikolaos Paradeisis, Director of Agros General High School
- Mr. Theofanis Simou, Director of Agros Middle School

- Mr. Achilleas Kapetanios, President of the ELME Corfu Board
- Representatives from Parents & Guardians Associations of Agros High School and Middle School
- Student council representatives from Agros Middle and High Schools
- Students, parents, educators, and school unit directors
The Municipal Authority welcomed all participants and their contributions. The lengthy discussion covered detailed issues concerning:
- School housing and the condition of school infrastructure
- School transportation
- Funding for school units
- Daily operational matters of schools
- The high cost of housing and living for civil servants
Municipal Actions and Challenges
The Municipal Authority presented its current actions, ongoing interventions, and the institutional and financial framework within which the Municipality operates. Special emphasis was placed on the objective difficulties faced by Local Government Organizations due to:
- Limited resources
- Increased responsibilities
- Significant financial burdens
In this context, the following were highlighted once again:
- The abolition of School Committees, an institutional change that significantly burdens the operation of Municipalities and school units. The North Corfu Municipality had previously and publicly raised concerns about the consequences of this abolition on managing school needs and the financial flexibility of schools, without receiving the necessary response and support at the time.
- The chronic underfunding of Education and school infrastructure by the State.
It was noted that no new school unit had been constructed in the North Corfu Municipality since 2006. These challenges are exacerbated by the fact that the Municipality bears an annual cost of 3.5 million euros solely for waste transportation, which objectively limits its capacity for immediate interventions. Nevertheless, the Municipality stated its commitment to strategic and consistent interventions, prioritizing education.
Responses from Educational Officials
Detailed answers regarding actions and objective capabilities were provided by:
- Mr. Ioannis Zikos, Health & Education Councillor for the Ionian Islands Regional Unit
- Ms. Eleni I. Vousolinou, Director of Secondary Education
- Mr. Aristotelis Vlasis, Director of Primary Education
The discussion underscored the intense anxiety within the educational community, among parents, and students. Moments of tension during the meeting highlighted the seriousness and emotional weight of education-related issues.
Future Plans and Commitments
The Municipal Authority of North Corfu clearly outlined its institutional responsibility and specific plans, announcing, among other things:
- The initiation of procedures for creating four (4) kindergartens, with the first being the completion of procedures for the Avliotes Kindergarten.
- The establishment of a crèche-nursery school in Dafni, Agios Georgios Municipal Unit.
- Actions to add a 50 sq.m. classroom to the Special Primary School.
- The renovation of a building for the housing and operation of a Unified Special Vocational High School (EN.E.E.G.Y.-L.).
- The announcement of a tender for the purchase of a plot adjacent to the Agros Middle-High School complex to enhance student safety.
- The creation of a Vocational High School (EPAL) with specified specialties and infrastructure.
- The development of a rational and documented study for student distribution, based on criteria such as building safety, classroom capacity, infrastructure functionality, and pedagogical needs.
Despite underfunding from the State for services it is obligated to provide, such as water supply and municipal-rural road construction, the North Corfu Municipality reaffirmed that Education, Sports, and Culture remain a constant priority. It stated that it is even allocating its own resources for projects and interventions. Significant self-funded interventions have been implemented, demonstrating a tangible difference compared to the past. The creation and operation of the Special Primary School and the Platon Kindergarten are specific examples of school facilities that were delivered under conditions of safety, functionality, and dignity, meeting the real needs of students and educators.
Concurrently, the Municipality:
- Acknowledges the existing and chronic problems of schools.
- Works within its competencies and actual capabilities.
- Remains open to dialogue and cooperation with all institutional bodies.
In conclusion, in an era of intense, rapid, and often unpredictable social, economic, and institutional developments, shared concerns and responsibilities outweigh any individual differences. The care for children is a common ground and a common goal. The problems in education are the result of long-standing choices and omissions by the State, which have led to chronic underfunding and a accumulation of deficiencies in school infrastructure and operations. In this context, differing opinions, within a healthy, documented, and sincere dialogue, act as a lever for synthesis, responsibility, and progress, with the future of the new generation as a priority.
