European Airlines: No Cancellations for Flights To and From Corfu – A Relatively Good Picture Maintained – The Greek Perspective
Corfu, April 24 – As the conflict in the Middle East continues, the aviation sector has experienced significant financial repercussions. Many airlines have been forced to cancel routes globally. In Europe, German Lufthansa is canceling summer routes and reducing its fleet, while Dutch KLM will cut 80 round-trip flights from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, its largest base. It is anticipated that other airlines will also be compelled to adjust their strategies for an extended period to absorb these disruptions.
Remarkably, current data indicates that no flight cancellations to or from Corfu have been announced. The dynamic for air ticket bookings to the island does not reflect the ongoing conflict in the region. While predictions in an evolving conflict cannot be entirely accurate, this year may see a slight dip from initial estimates. However, there are no exceptionally pessimistic forecasts on the horizon, as the demand for travel remains very high.
The Greek Assessment and Impact on the Aviation Sector
During the General Assembly of Aegean Airlines, chaired by Mr. Eftychios Vassilakis, current developments were highlighted, specifically the company’s strategy in response to the profound economic crisis that has unfolded, with the Middle East conflict nearing two months.
Mr. Vassilakis emphasized that fuel, which represents a major concern, has more than doubled from $700 to $1,400-$1,800 per ton, accounting for 20-25% of operating costs. The company has already absorbed a portion of these increases, but pressures are trending upwards, leading to a small increase in ticket prices, with the possibility of further rises not ruled out.
According to the company, March showed negative figures. However, despite these negative indicators, Aegean is proceeding with new investments. Specifically, in 2026, the company will take delivery of 7 new A321NEO aircraft, and in 2027, 5 LR Long Range aircraft, which will be capable of operating long-haul routes. The A321NEO family, in addition to its larger passenger capacity, will contribute to fuel savings due to lower fuel consumption compared to older or other aircraft of the same category – a crucial factor, especially today.
Finally, during the summer season, Aegean Airlines will operate a large number of flights connecting Greece with several international (and domestic) cities from Athens and the Greek islands, and will also introduce new flights.
Aegean is restarting certain flights from Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos,” Heraklion, and Rhodes to the Middle East. Specifically, the routes are:
- Flights from Athens to Tel Aviv restart on April 28.
- Flights from Heraklion to Tel Aviv restart on April 30.
- Flights from Larnaca to Tel Aviv restart on May 21.
- Flights from Rhodes to Tel Aviv restart on May 21.
- Flights from Athens to Riyadh restart on May 21.
- Flights from Athens to Amman restart on May 21.
Company Announcement
“We would like to inform you that AEGEAN, following a careful evaluation of the current situation, is proceeding with the resumption of certain flights that had been canceled due to developments in the Middle East.”
