Presidential Decree Paves Way for New School Complex in Gouvia-Kondokali
Corfu, May 9 – The Central Corfu Municipality has officially announced that the Presidential Decree approving the Local Urban Plan for the construction of the new School Complex in Gouvia-Kondokali, at the “Panagia” location, was signed on Friday, May 8, 2026. This development marks a significant milestone for the region, addressing a long-standing demand from the local community, the educational sector, and parents.
This project is envisioned as a crucial investment in education, enhancing the quality of life for families and securing the future of children in the area. The announcement was made by the Central Corfu Municipality, highlighting the collaborative efforts that led to this positive outcome.
Modern Infrastructure and Comprehensive Facilities
The new school complex is designed to fill a notable gap in existing school infrastructure, providing students with safe, functional, and modern learning conditions. The total budget for the project is estimated at 5,350,000 euros (including VAT) and is financed through the “Antonis Tritsis” program, which it joined in 2022. The study for the project was prepared by the previous municipal authority.
According to the technical study, the project includes:
- 2,614 sq.m. of building facilities, which will house a modern 12-classroom Primary School and a 3-section Kindergarten.
- Sports facilities with basketball and volleyball courts.
- An outdoor theatre for cultural and school activities.
- 22 parking spaces.
- Extensive green spaces and planting.
Coordinated Efforts Lead to Success
This positive development is the culmination of coordinated efforts, persistence, and collaboration among all involved bodies and services of the Municipality. Special mention was made of the Directorate of Urban Planning, Spatial Planning & Environment Services, which successfully managed the highly demanding and time-consuming process of maturing and promoting the approval of the Local Urban Plan.
The Directorate of Technical Services also played a crucial role in achieving this goal within its area of responsibility (geotechnical studies, etc.). It successfully tendered the relevant contract, and the contractor is now ready to commence the project. The Municipal Services, through systematic work and a high sense of responsibility, completed more than 46 administrative and other acts, addressing complex urban planning, technical, and administrative procedures to bring the project file to its final institutional stage. Their contribution was catalytic, as without methodical monitoring, documentation, and continuous coordination of the required actions, the completion of such a demanding process would not have been possible.
The contribution of the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy and Member of Parliament for Corfu, Stefanos Gikas, was also significant in promoting the necessary institutional actions that pave the way for the construction of the new school complex.
Mayor’s Statement of Satisfaction
Mayor Stefanos Poulis expressed his satisfaction with the completion of the demanding approval procedures for the Local Urban Plan, which opens the way for the implementation of the most discussed school housing issue on the island. In his statement, he noted:
“The signing of the Presidential Decree for the Gouvia-Kondokali school complex, after persistent and coordinated efforts spanning 28 months, brings feelings of joy and satisfaction to everyone. It sends a message of optimism to the local community, confirming that the Municipality has continuity, especially in serving its central choices. It also teaches that when we proceed with consistency, unity, and determination, even the most ambitious goal can become a reality.”
He extended a “big thank you” to his colleagues in the political leadership of the Municipality and the staff of the services who gave their best to make the goal set in early 2024 a reality today. Thanks were also extended to the staff of many other public services that were approached for their legal responsibilities, where a spirit and practice of cooperation were met.
“For overcoming many difficulties encountered in the incredible state bureaucracy, we needed and received, at a central level, the help of our compatriot Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Stefanos Gikas, whom I also feel the need to thank. And to many more such things to come!”
