Petaleia Weather Station in Corfu Enters New Era with Advanced Equipment

Corfu, April 29, 2026 – The Petaleia Weather Station in Corfu has completed a comprehensive upgrade, marking a new era for local meteorological coverage. The station, operated by amateur meteorologist and forecaster Nikolaos Vlachos, now features fully upgraded equipment and a new infrastructure, promising enhanced accuracy and reliability in weather forecasting for the region.

State-of-the-Art Technology for Precise Measurements

The core of the upgrade includes the installation of a Davis Vantage Pro2, recognized internationally as one of the most reliable and accurate professional weather stations. Complementing this, an Observatory-grade mast has been erected, ensuring optimal positioning and maximum accuracy for all measurements. This significant investment aims to provide:

  • Even more reliable real-time data.
  • Improved quality of forecasts for the wider area.
  • Stable operation under all weather conditions.
  • Measurements of high scientific accuracy.

This initiative represents a crucial step forward for local meteorological services, benefiting the entire region with more precise and timely weather information.

Collaborative Effort Behind the Upgrade

The successful implementation of this upgrade was a collaborative effort. Nikolaos Vlachos extended his gratitude to several key individuals and institutions:

  • Mr. Kostas Lagouvardos, Research Director of the National Observatory of Athens, for providing the Observatory-grade mast.
  • Spyridon Lykoudi and his scientific team from the National Observatory of Athens – Penteli, who visited Petaleia on April 22 to ensure the correct installation and placement of both the mast and the new Davis Vantage Pro2 at his grandfather’s threshing floor in Vlachatika.
  • Mr. Vasileios Ifantis, responsible for monitoring weather stations, for his invaluable assistance with settings, technical advice, and configuring the control panel in the WeatherLink 6.0.5 program on the computer unit.

The first photograph accompanying the announcement shows Nikolaos Vlachos alongside Spyridon Lykoudi and the scientific team from the National Observatory of Athens, highlighting the teamwork involved in this project.

Impact on Local Weather Forecasting

The upgraded Petaleia Weather Station is expected to significantly improve the precision of local weather forecasts, which is critical for various sectors, including agriculture, tourism, and daily life for residents. With the ability to provide more accurate and real-time data, the station will serve as a vital resource for understanding and preparing for weather conditions in Corfu and the surrounding Ionian Islands.

Nikolaos Vlachos, who also manages the Acharavi weather station in Northern Corfu, emphasized the importance of this upgrade for the community, ensuring that residents and visitors alike will have access to the most up-to-date and reliable weather information.
