New Athens Investigates Water Loss Source, Monitors Hydrants

New Athens, June 13 — Village officials in New Athens are actively investigating the source of significant water loss that has contributed to a substantial increase in the village’s water bill. Concerns have been raised regarding potential unauthorized use of fire hydrants, prompting the installation of a trail camera to monitor these critical points.

Unauthorized Hydrant Use Suspected

Mayor Joe Petro reported during the May 18 Village Council meeting that a fire hydrant was discovered with a loose cap, leading to suspicions of illegal water abstraction. In response, all hydrant caps have been marked, and authorization was given to shut off the affected hydrant pending investigation. At the subsequent June 9 council meeting, officials confirmed the purchase and deployment of a trail camera to continuously monitor fire hydrants for any unauthorized activity.

Wastewater Study Contract Approved

In a related development, the Village Council approved a contract with the Spicer Group for funding, study, and report services pertaining to the village’s wastewater treatment plant. This agreement, sanctioned on May 18, carries a cost of $44,200.

Water Service Disruptions Expected During Culvert Project

Residents of New Athens have been advised that they may experience water service disruptions lasting four to five hours due to a state culvert replacement project. The project commenced by June 9, with Zeroski Excavating actively relocating a waterline under the supervision of the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Community Surveys and Other Village Business

Officials also reported that surveys targeting low- and moderate-income residents have been distributed. A second round of these surveys is scheduled for distribution following the June council meeting.

During the May meeting, Council member Heather Galensky voiced concerns about negative feedback from residents regarding the placement of veterans banners. Officials clarified that the village cannot guarantee specific locations for banner placement.

Additionally, the council approved a $100 donation to the Cadiz American Legion for Memorial Day services.

State Representative Candidate Attends Council Meeting

At the June council meeting, Paul Cameron, a Democratic state representative candidate, was present to hear concerns from village officials. According to the minutes, discussions included topics such as funding and financial assistance.

Dump Truck Repairs Pending

Finally, officials reported that the village dump truck is in need of brake repairs. The next regular council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on July 13.
