Athens, Greece – December 13, 2025 – The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) has made history by becoming the only Greek university to rank among the world’s top 200 higher education institutions in 2025. This significant achievement was announced today, as EKPA secured the 191st position in the prestigious Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities (NTU Rankings), also known as the Taiwan Rankings.
NTU Rankings: A Focus on Research Excellence
Published annually by National Taiwan University, the NTU Rankings are distinguished by their exclusive focus on research performance. Unlike more composite university rankings, the NTU methodology evaluates institutions based on scientific impact, citation metrics, and both long-term and short-term research productivity. This rigorous approach, centered purely on published scholarly output and its global influence, establishes the NTU Rankings as one of the seven most widely recognized and objective global university ranking systems.
EKPA’s entry into this elite group represents a historic milestone for Greek higher education. Notably, no other Greek university has appeared in the global top 200 across any of the seven major international ranking systems in 2025, underscoring the singular nature of EKPA’s accomplishment.
Outstanding Performance in Medicine
Beyond its overall ranking, EKPA demonstrated exceptional research prowess in the field of Medicine, achieving an outstanding global position of 102nd worldwide. This specific recognition highlights the university’s significant contributions and research excellence within the health sciences.
Other prominent Greek universities that featured in the 2025 NTU Rankings include Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Crete, Harokopio University of Athens, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), University of Ioannina, University of Thessaly, and University of Patras.
For context, the 2024 Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), which evaluated the top 2,000 universities out of 20,966 institutions globally, saw Greece represented by 12 universities, with Cyprus contributing two institutions to the list.
Rectorate’s Statement on the Achievement
The Rectorate of EKPA issued a statement regarding this momentous achievement: “The entry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens into the global top 200 is the result of systematic investment in high-quality research and the tireless work of our academic community. This distinction belongs to every researcher, professor, and student who contributes daily to the international visibility of Greek higher education.”
This recognition not only elevates EKPA’s international standing but also shines a spotlight on the potential and ongoing efforts within the Greek academic landscape to produce world-class research and foster intellectual growth.
