Major Car Theft Ring Uncovered in Attica: 13 Arrested in Spata-Artemida Operation

Athens, June 15, 2026 – The Hellenic Police have successfully dismantled one of Attica’s largest criminal organizations involved in vehicle theft, operating primarily in the Spata-Artemida region. Police officers from the Crimes Prosecution and Investigation Department arrested 13 members of the organization, ranging in age from 22 to 38 years old.

A case file has been opened against them, charging them with forming and joining a criminal organization, aggravated vehicle theft, forgery, fraud, and money laundering from criminal activities.

How the Fraud Scheme Operated

Investigations by police officers from the Spata-Artemida Crimes Prosecution and Investigation Department revealed that since March 2023, the organization’s members had established and joined a criminal group with the aim of systematically stealing vehicles from various areas of Attica. Subsequently, they would falsify the circulation documents and identification details of the stolen vehicles before reselling them to unsuspecting citizens.

Specifically, the criminal group would steal vehicles, then remove the genuine parts bearing the vehicle’s chassis number. They would then tamper with or replace the chassis number to make the vehicles appear legitimate for sale. This process effectively ‘legalized’ the stolen vehicles, making them ready for resale. Among the stolen models were vehicles from well-known brands such as Toyota, Opel, and Volvo.

Profiting from Insurance Claims

It was also discovered that members of the criminal organization made false reports of vehicle thefts to collect insurance compensation, thereby obtaining illegal financial benefits.

During the months-long investigation, police recovered and impounded a total of 36 vehicles. Of these, 19 were confirmed, after specialized technical inspection, to be stolen with falsified identification details. These vehicles have since been returned to their rightful owners.

Furthermore, authorities have solved 33 cases of vehicle theft and 9 cases of false theft declarations. The total financial gain of the criminal organization is estimated to be approximately 1,000,000 euros. The exact number of vehicles stolen and resold with falsified documents to citizens remains a key question for investigators.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Safety Concerns

The Hellenic Police continue their investigation to determine the full extent of the organization’s activities and to identify any other victims. The public is urged to exercise caution when purchasing used vehicles and to verify all documentation thoroughly.

This bust highlights the persistent issue of organized car crime in the region and the sophisticated methods employed by such groups to defraud both individuals and insurance companies. Authorities emphasize their commitment to combating these criminal networks to ensure public safety and protect citizens’ property.

Further details regarding the investigation and potential future arrests are expected to be released as the case progresses.
