Athens, Greece – A 38-year-old man arrested in Greece during a major Europol-led crackdown on international cybercrime this month has vehemently denied accusations of creating the notorious infostealer VenomRAT. The denial comes from a legal source and court documents reviewed by Reuters, shedding light on the ongoing legal proceedings following ‘Operation Endgame’.

Europol’s ‘Operation Endgame’ Targets Global Cybercrime

Earlier this month, Europol, the pan-European law enforcement cooperation agency, announced the success of ‘Operation Endgame’, a large-scale initiative targeting prominent infostealers and botnets. The operation specifically focused on dismantling the infrastructure behind Rhadamanthys, the Remote Access Trojan VenomRAT, and the botnet Elysium. This concerted effort resulted in the shutdown of more than 1,025 servers globally, significantly impacting the international cybercrime landscape.

Europol highlighted the extensive reach of the dismantled malware infrastructure, which comprised hundreds of thousands of infected computers. These compromised systems contained several million stolen credentials, underscoring the severe threat posed by these cybercriminal networks.

Detainee Denies Charges, Cites Lack of Information

The Albanian national, whose identity has not been publicly released, faces a litany of charges. These include producing, possessing, and trafficking the surveillance software Venom and Pandora, activities allegedly ongoing since at least 2022. Additionally, he is accused of assisting in the illegal monitoring of data and engaging in money laundering activities, as detailed in the court documents seen by Reuters.

During his detention, the 38-year-old reportedly stated that he was not fully informed about all the charges against him in a timely manner, a claim that may form part of his defense strategy.

International Investigations Underway, Extradition Pending

The arrest in Greece is part of a broader international effort to combat cybercrime. Both French and US authorities have launched their own investigations into the activities linked to ‘Operation Endgame’. Furthermore, France has initiated an extradition request for the detained individual, indicating the multinational scope and gravity of the alleged offenses.

The legal proceedings in Greece are expected to continue as authorities from various countries collaborate to bring those responsible for these sophisticated cybercrimes to justice. The case highlights the increasing challenges faced by law enforcement in tracking and prosecuting cybercriminals operating across international borders.
