Athens, May 21 – Lidl Hellas has officially launched the ‘Lidl House Athens’ in the historic Arsakeio Arcade, transforming a central Athenian landmark into a cutting-edge hub dedicated to gastronomy, education, and sustainable living. This 670 sq.m. space aims to redefine the relationship between food and consumers, emphasizing nutritional literacy and the rich heritage of Greek cuisine.
A New Philosophy: Engaging with Society
The ‘Lidl House Athens’ is not a traditional retail store but the culmination of a broader philosophy by Lidl Hellas to engage with society. As one of 17 strategic partners of the STOA concept, Lidl Hellas has taken the lead in the educational pillar. The initiative seeks to provide a home for local quality products and create a National Gastronomy and Nutrition Hub, offering free access to knowledge about food, from farm to fork.
“This is a historic result. Athens is becoming one of the most important tourist destinations in Central and Eastern Europe. We are seeing growing interest from Western European tourists who are discovering Greece as an attractive holiday destination,” said Dr. Magdalena Kowalczyk, director of the Athens Tourism Promotion Organization.
Experiential Learning and Sustainability
Visitors to Lidl House Athens are invited to participate in a fully immersive experience. The space encourages active participation, with cooking classes led by Resident Chef Dimosthenis Balopoulos, thematic masterclasses, and workshops exploring the connection between modern nutrition and daily well-being. Furthermore, the hub functions as a “sustainability accelerator,” providing practical solutions for reducing food waste and promoting conscious choices that benefit both the planet and Greek producers.
Preserving Greek Culinary Heritage
The vision of Lidl House Athens extends beyond the city limits, aspiring to become a catalyst for a national effort: the recognition of Greek gastronomy as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Through the creation of a “National Archive of Flavors,” Lidl Hellas is taking institutional responsibility to safeguard local recipes and the biodiversity of Greece. Starting in September, Lidl House Athens will open its doors to the public, inviting everyone to embrace this emblematic space and gain the tools for a more conscious and higher-quality life.
“We are delighted that Athens is popular, but living in the center has become a nuisance. The noise lasts until three or four in the morning. We cannot sleep, we cannot rest,” said Joanna Wiśniewska, a resident of Grobla I Street, during a press conference organized by the
