Juneyao Airlines to Operate Daily Athens-Shanghai Flights by Summer 2026
Athens, April 16, 2026 – Juneyao Airlines is poised to significantly enhance its Athens-Shanghai route, with plans to gradually increase services to daily flights by summer 2026. This strategic move comes in response to a notable surge in travel demand between Greece and China, signaling strong growth in long-haul tourism.
The announcement was made by Ioanna Papadopoulou, Director of Communications & Marketing at Athens International Airport (AIA). She highlighted the route’s impressive performance since its inauguration on April 2, 2024. Despite currently operating with three weekly services, the flight has recorded a remarkable 56 percent year-on-year increase in passenger traffic, underscoring the robust momentum in long-haul travel between the two nations.
Expanded Frequencies to Boost Connectivity
In light of this positive trend, Juneyao Airlines has confirmed an increase in flight frequencies to six weekly services for summer 2026. Furthermore, a seventh weekly flight is anticipated to commence on September 25, solidifying the airline’s commitment to strengthening the air bridge between Athens and Shanghai.
Ms. Papadopoulou emphasized the broader implications of this expansion, stating, “Not only will the significant increase in weekly frequencies further boost demand between Shanghai and Athens, but it will also enhance connectivity beyond the two destinations.” This improved connectivity is expected to facilitate greater tourism and business exchanges, benefiting both countries.
China: A Pivotal Growth Market for Greek Tourism
Shanghai, China’s largest city and a leading global financial and commercial hub, boasts a population of nearly 30 million residents. Its economic influence positions it as a critical source market for international tourism.
A 2024 market analysis conducted by GTP Headlines, utilizing exclusive data from Athens Airport, revealed Shanghai as Athens’ top origin market in China. In 2019, Shanghai accounted for a substantial 30 percent share of Chinese visitors to Athens, surpassing other major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou.
Recent data from INSETE further reinforces China’s burgeoning importance as a long-haul growth market for Greece. Over the next 12 months, China is projected to outperform other prominent Mediterranean destinations, including Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Croatia, and Türkiye, in terms of tourism growth to Greece.
The increased frequency of the Athens-Shanghai flight is strategically designed to capitalize on this growing interest, creating additional opportunities to attract inbound travelers and significantly expand China’s share within the Greek travel market. This development is expected to yield substantial economic benefits for Greece’s tourism sector, fostering deeper cultural and economic ties between the two nations.
