Corfu, November 21 – The Ionian Islands Regional Governor, Giannis Trepekli, visited the communities of Northern Corfu that were severely hit by intense weather phenomena on November 19th and 20th. Accompanied by a delegation from the Regional Unit of Corfu, Trepekli conducted an extensive on-site inspection, assessing the gravity of the damage and emphasizing the urgent need for immediate restoration.
Extensive Damage Across Northern Corfu
Intense rainfall and extreme weather conditions caused significant floods, landslides, and widespread damage, even within residential areas. The affected communities, including Karousades, Antipernoi, Kavallouri, and Sidari, experienced severe disruptions, with accessibility becoming impossible in many locations, even within settlements.
The Regional Governor was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Alexandros Dimou, Deputy Regional Governor of Corfu and head of Civil Protection; Giorgos Mamalos, Deputy Regional Governor for Technical Works & Planning; Giannis Zikos, Assigned Regional Councillor for Health & Education; Konstantinos Gasteratos, Director of Technical Services of the Regional Unit of Corfu; and other Civil Protection officials. The team meticulously documented the extent of the destruction, which included damaged infrastructure, inundated homes, and impassable roads.
Climate Change: A Major Factor
During his visit, Mr. Trepekli underscored that the intensity of these phenomena confirms the serious impacts of climate change on the Ionian Islands. He noted that significant damage is now being recorded even within organized settlements, a concerning development that points to a shifting environmental landscape. He highlighted that while Central Corfu was initially affected, the northern part of the island subsequently bore the brunt of the extreme weather, suffering extensive devastation.
“The severity of these events clearly indicates the profound effects of climate change on our islands,” stated Trepekli. “We are witnessing unprecedented levels of damage, not just in isolated areas, but within established communities. This necessitates a re-evaluation of our infrastructure and emergency response strategies.”
Immediate Response and Restoration Efforts
The primary focus of the regional authorities is now on immediate restoration efforts, particularly to re-establish accessibility in the affected areas. Many roads and local pathways were rendered unusable by the floods and landslides, isolating residents and hindering emergency services. Technical teams are already on the ground, working to clear debris and repair critical infrastructure.
Civil Protection units were deployed immediately following the events to provide assistance to affected residents, assess the damage, and coordinate initial relief efforts. The Regional Unit of Corfu is working in close collaboration with local municipalities to ensure a swift and effective response to the crisis.
The long-term strategy will involve implementing measures to mitigate the effects of future extreme weather events, including strengthening infrastructure, improving drainage systems, and developing more robust early warning systems. The Regional Governor emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to address the challenges posed by climate change, ensuring the safety and resilience of the Ionian Islands.
Further updates on the restoration progress and long-term plans will be provided as the situation evolves.
