Ithaca, November 27 – The Ionian Islands Region (PIN) has significantly bolstered school sports in Ithaca by delivering new athletic equipment to all educational institutions on the island. The initiative, which took place over November 25 and 26, 2025, saw sports gear distributed to the Vathy and Platreithia Kindergartens, Vathy and Stavros Primary Schools, Ithaca Junior High School, Ithaca General High School, and Ithaca Vocational High School.
Regional Program for Youth Development
This initiative is a key component of the PIN’s broader youth program, which encompasses educational, athletic, and cultural activities across all the Ionian Islands. The Region’s primary objective is to support physical education, foster teamwork, and provide creative engagement opportunities for students at every level of their schooling.
The official handover of the sports equipment was conducted by the Prefect of Ithaca, Smaragda Sardeli, who emphasized the critical importance of daily physical activity and healthy development for young people.
“The Ionian Islands Region is committed to supporting our schools in every possible way, ensuring that all children have equal opportunities for sports, play, and creative activities. The sports equipment we are delivering today marks another step in this direction,” stated Prefect Sardeli during the ceremony.
Impact on Ithaca Schools
The donation is expected to have a substantial positive impact on the schools in Ithaca, providing students with access to modern and diverse sports equipment. This will enable a wider range of physical activities and enhance the quality of physical education classes.
Promoting Physical Activity and Teamwork
By investing in school sports, the Ionian Islands Region aims to instill a love for physical activity from an early age, contributing to the overall well-being and healthy development of the island’s youth. The provision of new equipment will also facilitate team sports, encouraging cooperation and social interaction among students.
The initiative has been met with enthusiasm from school administrators, teachers, and students alike, who recognize the value of upgraded sports facilities and resources.
Future Initiatives and Commitment
This recent delivery of sports equipment underscores the Ionian Islands Region’s ongoing commitment to youth development and education. The PIN plans to continue similar initiatives in other islands, ensuring that all children within the region have access to the resources needed for a holistic educational experience that includes robust physical activity programs.
The Region’s comprehensive youth program is designed to create a supportive environment for young people, promoting not only academic excellence but also physical health and cultural engagement.
The event highlights the proactive approach of the Ionian Islands Region in addressing the needs of its educational institutions and fostering a healthier, more active generation.
