Human Trafficking Ring Busted in Athens: Four Arrested for Exploitation of Women and Drug Trafficking
Athens, Greece – A significant blow has been dealt to an organized network accused of exploiting foreign women for sexual and financial purposes, following a coordinated operation in Athens in mid-June.
The case came to light after a complaint from a woman who reported being a victim of human trafficking. She contacted authorities via the emergency line 112, and officers who responded found evidence that led to a broader investigation into a potential trafficking ring.
Extensive Investigation Uncovers Exploitation and Deception
A multi-month investigation by specialized officers from the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, with the assistance of the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), revealed the operation of an organized group. According to the police, the group allegedly recruited women from Latin American countries with false promises of employment and better living conditions in Greece.
Upon their arrival in the country, the women were reportedly subjected to a regime of control and dependency. Investigation findings indicate that the ring members imposed fabricated debts on the women for their travel and settlement expenses, then demanded repayment through the provision of sexual services.
Client appointments were arranged through an online dating platform, and the women’s movements to hotels and residences in Attica were supervised by group members. Furthermore, according to the case file, their activities and financial earnings were continuously monitored.
Arrests Made and Drug Trafficking Uncovered
The police investigation led to the arrest of four individuals, including the alleged leader of the organization. The suspects include a 26-year-old Greek national, two foreign nationals aged 27 and 19, and a 31-year-old foreign national. They face charges including participation in a criminal organization, human trafficking, pimping, and drug law violations.
During the investigation, it was also revealed that the same individuals were allegedly involved in a separate drug trafficking ring. Authorities believe that various types of drugs were stored in residences used by the group and subsequently distributed to the market, with some also ending up with the women under their control.
Searches conducted in homes and other premises uncovered large quantities of synthetic drugs, including MDMA, methamphetamine, ketamine, and ecstasy pills, as well as cannabis, psilocybin mushrooms, drug processing and packaging equipment, electronic scales, mobile phones, computers, documents, money transfers, and cash.
Victim Protection and Ongoing Investigation
In parallel, authorities provided protection and support to three women who were identified as victims of the ring, in cooperation with specialized organizations working to combat human trafficking.
The four arrested individuals have been brought before prosecutorial authorities, and the investigation is ongoing to determine if there are other individuals connected to the network’s activities.
