Corfu, December 9 – A new era for the cultural landscape of Corfu has begun with the official signing of a €6,396,851.22 act for the restoration and reuse of the historic Angelos Giallinas Gallery. The Ionian Islands Regional Governor, Giannis Trepeklis, confirmed the funding today, marking a significant step forward for the city’s cultural heritage.
Secured Funding and Renewed Hope for the Landmark
Governor Trepeklis stated, “Today I signed the great project that Corfu, the historic city center, and the Giallinas Foundation have been waiting for.” This announcement follows previous attempts to restore the building that had faced obstacles. However, the current conditions are now favorable, with the funding secured to ensure the project’s completion with meticulous attention to detail and quality.
The restoration project focuses on a listed building located in the old town of Corfu, at the intersection of Lavrentiou Mavili, Kapodistriou, and Seremeti streets. This building, with a total area of 1,391.07 m², is officially designated as a historical preserved monument.
Extensive Renovation and Functional Transformation
The planned works for the gallery are comprehensive, encompassing demolitions, restorations, and the internal and external landscaping of the surrounding area. The primary objective is to ensure the full functionality of the Angelos Giallinas Gallery as a vibrant cultural hub.
Upon completion, the ground floor of the gallery will be dedicated to educational and commercial activities, fostering community engagement and providing a space for cultural exchange. The first and second floors will house exhibition spaces, specifically designed to showcase the works of the renowned artist Angelos Giallinas, allowing visitors to experience his artistic legacy in a dedicated environment.
Contribution to Regional Cultural Development
The restoration and reuse of the Angelos Giallinas Gallery are expected to contribute significantly to the cultural development of the region. By providing a new space for artistic and educational activities, the project aims to enrich the cultural offerings of Corfu and attract both local residents and tourists. This initiative underscores the commitment to preserving historical landmarks while simultaneously revitalizing them for contemporary use, ensuring their continued relevance and contribution to the community.
The project’s successful execution is anticipated to enhance Corfu’s appeal as a cultural destination, offering a dedicated venue for art appreciation and learning. The meticulous planning and secured funding signal a promising future for this important cultural institution.
