Athens, December 2 – A 48-year-old foreign national, sought by Albanian authorities on an international red notice for drug trafficking, was apprehended on Saturday, November 29, at “Eleftherios Venizelos” International Airport in Athens. The arrest was carried out by officers of the Athens Airport Police Directorate.

Details of the Arrest and Charges

According to information released by the Greek Police (ELAS), the suspect faces serious charges related to drug trafficking. He is accused of delivering packages in June 2008 to another individual. These packages allegedly contained more than three kilograms of cannabis and 290 grams of cocaine. The intention behind these deliveries was said to be the distribution of the illicit substances.

The international red notice, which led to the fugitive’s arrest, was issued by Albanian authorities, highlighting the cross-border nature of the alleged criminal activity. The operation underscores the cooperation between international law enforcement agencies in combating organized crime.

Legal Proceedings Initiated

Following his arrest, the individual was immediately taken before the competent Prosecutor’s Office in Athens. This step marks the beginning of further legal proceedings against the suspect, which will determine his culpability and potential extradition to Albania to face the charges. The Greek judicial system will now handle the case in accordance with national and international legal frameworks.

The arrest serves as a reminder of the continuous efforts by police forces to track down and apprehend individuals involved in illegal drug trade, regardless of the time elapsed since the alleged offenses. Authorities remain vigilant in their pursuit of justice and in maintaining public safety.

Ongoing Efforts Against Drug Trafficking

Drug trafficking remains a significant concern for law enforcement agencies across Europe. The successful apprehension of this fugitive highlights the effectiveness of international cooperation and the use of tools like international red notices in bringing alleged criminals to justice. Police forces are constantly working to dismantle drug networks and prevent the distribution of illegal substances. This case will now proceed through the Greek legal system, with potential implications for international collaboration in future investigations.
