Athens and Piraeus to Unveil Four Landmark Museums in 2026

The Attica region in Greece is poised for a radical cultural transformation in 2026, with four major museum projects nearing completion. These initiatives are set to significantly enrich the cultural landscape of Athens and Piraeus.

Tatoi Royal Estate: A Cultural Park Blending History and Recreation

Autumn 2026 marks a historic milestone for the former Tatoi Royal Estate. The restoration of its historic core, a flagship project of the Ministry of Culture, aims to revitalize the landscape following the devastating fires of 2021. With a budget of €70 million ($81.4 million), the estate will be transformed into a multidimensional public park, seamlessly blending history with recreation. The complex will feature:

  • The Palace: Showcasing personal items and artworks of the former royal family from the early 20th century.
  • The New Stables: Divided into two wings, one housing the former royal vehicle collection and the other dedicated to the estate’s agricultural and livestock history.
  • The Old Stables: Home to the Museum of Royal Carriages.

Beyond the museums, 24 historic buildings are being leased to private investors for conversion into guesthouses, restaurants, and event spaces.

Museum of Underwater Antiquities: Piraeus’s New Landmark

Currently under construction at the Piraeus port, the Silo, a 1930s grain elevator, is being reimagined as the National Museum of Underwater Antiquities. This is the largest cultural project currently underway in Greece, funded by €93 million ($108.2 million) from the Recovery Fund. Spanning over 26,000 square meters (279,861 sq ft), the museum will address a long-standing gap in the Greek museum map. It will house:

  • Over 2,500 exhibits recovered from the depths of the Greek seas, dating from prehistory to WWII.
  • High-tech interactive applications and state-of-the-art conservation laboratories.
  • The preserved industrial conveyor belt system originally used for loading ships.

The Old Acropolis Museum: A New Beginning

Located on the southeast side of the Parthenon, the Old Acropolis Museum, closed since its treasures were moved in 2007, will reopen in the spring of 2026 as a dynamic extension of the archaeological site. The reopening will be headlined by the exhibition “Athens: Immortal City” and a contemporary collaboration with the NEON organization. The museum will uniquely feature an “open-view” conservation laboratory, allowing visitors to observe experts restoring 1,185 artifacts never before seen by the public.

The “Shackled” Skeletons of Faliro Museum: A Permanent Home

In 2026, the world-renowned “Shackled” skeletons (Desmotes) will finally have a permanent home at the Faliro Esplanade, adjacent to the SNFCC. This site contains one of the most chilling and significant archaeological finds of recent years: a mass grave of eighty men executed in the 7th century BC, many still wearing their iron shackles. The new €6.5 million ($7.5 million) facility will allow visitors to view the remains in situ (in their original location) via a descending cylindrical structure that respectfully preserves the site’s solemnity.

These four projects represent a significant investment in Greece’s cultural heritage and are expected to draw both local and international visitors, further cementing Athens’ position as a global cultural destination.
