In a proactive move to ensure all citizens have unimpeded access to the sea, the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands has announced the installation of SEATRAC systems at five popular and bustling locations across the island. These autonomous sea access mechanisms for people with disabilities (PWDs) and individuals with mobility problems have been operational since June 10 at NAOK, Ipsos, and Gouvia. Installations are also being finalized for Dassia and Paleokastritsa beaches.

Inclusive Access for All: SEATRAC Systems in Operation

The SEATRAC systems are designed to provide an easy and independent way for individuals with mobility challenges to enter and exit the water. This initiative underscores the Municipality’s commitment to offering equal recreational opportunities for everyone, especially as the summer season approaches.

Key Beaches with SEATRAC Systems:

  • NAOK (Corfu Municipal Unit): Now fully operational, allowing easy access for all visitors.
  • Ipsos (Faiaques Municipal Unit): Another popular spot where the SEATRAC system is actively serving the needs of PWDs.
  • Gouvia (Corfu Municipal Unit): In addition to the SEATRAC system, Gouvia beach has also been equipped with a special, separate guidance system specifically designed for individuals with visual impairments, further enhancing accessibility.

The Municipality confirmed that work for the installation of these systems at Dassia and Paleokastritsa beaches is nearing completion and will be available very soon. This expansion ensures that more areas across the island will be inclusive and welcoming to a wider range of visitors.

Commitment to Accessible Tourism

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands to promote accessible tourism and ensure that the island’s natural beauty can be enjoyed by all. By investing in such infrastructure, Corfu aims to set a precedent for inclusive practices in popular tourist destinations.

The early implementation of these systems, ahead of the peak summer season, demonstrates the Municipality’s foresight and dedication to providing necessary facilities. This commitment is expected to significantly enhance the experience for residents and tourists with disabilities, allowing them to enjoy the island’s renowned beaches with greater independence and ease.

Positive Impact on Local Community and Tourism

The provision of accessible beaches is not only a matter of social inclusion but also a significant boost for local tourism. By catering to the needs of people with disabilities, Corfu can attract a more diverse range of visitors, strengthening its reputation as a welcoming and progressive destination.

Local authorities hope that these efforts will encourage other regions to adopt similar measures, fostering a more inclusive environment across Greece. The success of the SEATRAC installations on Corfu serves as a model for how thoughtful infrastructure development can make a substantial difference in the lives of many.

The Municipality remains steadfast in its pledge for equal opportunities for recreation for all this summer and beyond, reinforcing its position as a leader in accessible tourism.
