Athens, Greece – As Christmas approaches, a festive atmosphere has enveloped the commercial streets of Athens and Thessaloniki. Shoppers are out in full force, seeking last-minute gifts and enjoying the holiday spirit.
Ermou Street in Athens: A Hub of Activity
Ermou Street, Athens’ most prominent shopping destination, is teeming with consumers and visitors. Many are taking advantage of the final Sunday before Christmas to complete their gift purchases. Makis Savvidis, Vice President of the Athens Commercial Association, noted to ERTnews that “since the beginning of the festive season this year, we have seen increased movement, especially in the central markets… What we observe this year is that purchases are of lower value.”
Piraeus and Thessaloniki Join the Festive Rush
The shopping frenzy extends to Piraeus, where the central pedestrian street, Sotiros, has been filled with people throughout the day, aided by pleasant weather. Thessaloniki is also experiencing a vibrant festive period, attracting numerous travelers from across Greece who are visiting the co-capital for their Christmas shopping.
Crowds and Commerce in Central Athens
The center of Athens is exceptionally busy, given that it is the last Sunday before Christmas. Stores are also expected to be open next Sunday. Even late in the afternoon, with many shops closed, Ermou Street remains lively with families out for their holiday shopping.
Shopkeepers’ Expectations Met
The increased activity in the markets has translated into sales, confirming shopkeepers’ predictions that business would pick up after December 20th.
Shopping and Leisure in Thessaloniki
Agia Sophia in Thessaloniki is also experiencing a surge of people, with consumers browsing both the outdoor stalls set up by artisans and the various shops. In Athos Square, an all-day outdoor event for all ages, organized by the local commercial association and area shopkeepers, recently concluded.
