Corfu, Greece – January 7, 2026 – The Epiphany celebrations in the parish of Potamos, Corfu, took place with ecclesiastical grandeur and deep reverence on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. The faithful gathered early in the morning at the Historic Holy Church of Panagia Eleousa, where the Matins and the festive Divine Liturgy were held. Following the service, the Great Blessing of the Waters was performed within the church.

Traditional Immersion of the Holy Cross in Potamos River

The religious procession then moved to the picturesque Potamos river, where the day’s culmination, the Ceremony of the Immersion of the Holy Cross, took place. A boat from the 5th Sea Scout System of Potamos was present in the middle of the river, adding a distinctive and traditional touch to the ceremony. The Sea Scouts, honoring custom, actively participated in the Blessing of the Waters.

A large crowd filled the banks beneath the historic bridge to receive the blessing. The event underscored the deep-rooted traditions and strong community spirit prevalent in the region during this significant religious holiday.

Community and Weather Conditions

The ceremony proceeded smoothly, despite earlier warnings from the Civil Protection of Central Corfu Municipality regarding intense weather phenomena. Sporadic storms were predicted for Monday evening, January 5, with winds reaching 5 to 7, and locally 8 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea. However, the temperature was expected to reach 15 degrees Celsius, and no significant disruptions were reported during the Epiphany celebrations.

The local authorities had urged citizens to take self-protection measures and avoid unnecessary travel during the intense weather. Despite these precautions, the Epiphany festivities in Potamos were well-attended and concluded without incident.

Upcoming Events and Local Information

For those interested in local events and weather updates, the Corfu TV News portal provides daily information. The Civil Protection Department of the Regional Unit of Corfu remains on 24-hour alert for any emergencies.

The event highlights the resilience of the community in observing its traditions, even in the face of challenging weather forecasts. The participation of the Sea Scouts further emphasizes the intergenerational transfer of cultural and religious practices in Corfu.
