Corfu, March 7 – In a critical display of inter-agency cooperation, the Corfu Port Authority and the National Centre for Emergency Medical Aid (EKAV) successfully carried out an urgent operation to save the life of an infant. The rapid response ensured the baby received vital hospital care that was unavailable on the island of Corfu.
Coordinated Effort for Life-Saving Transfer
According to an official statement, the transfer was deemed essential as the infant required immediate hospitalization. Under the coordination of the Port Authority’s Operations Center – Hellenic Coast Guard, a patrol vessel was immediately mobilized to facilitate the urgent medical evacuation.
The infant was safely transported from the port of Corfu to the port of Igoumenitsa on the mainland. Upon arrival, an EKAV ambulance was waiting to receive the baby and immediately transfer it to the Hospital of Ioannina, where specialized medical treatment could be provided.
Port Authority: A Lifeline for Island Residents
This incident underscores the critical role played by the Port Authority in providing a vital “sea route” for the residents and visitors of the Greek islands. The Hellenic Coast Guard consistently responds to emergency situations, ensuring that those in need receive timely and often life-saving assistance, especially when immediate medical care is not available locally.
Ongoing Commitment to Public Safety
The successful outcome of this emergency operation highlights the dedication and efficiency of both the Port Authority and EKAV in safeguarding public health and well-being. Their continuous readiness and coordinated efforts are crucial for the safety and security of the island communities and their inhabitants.
