Earthquakes Strike Evia Within Minutes, Shaking Athens
Athens, June 7, 2026 – A series of earthquakes struck the island of Evia on Sunday, causing damage to a number of houses and triggering landslides. The tremors were strongly felt in Athens and its surrounding areas. Despite the intensity of the quakes, no injuries have been reported, according to local authorities.
Two Quakes in Quick Succession
The first tremor, recorded at 12:58 p.m. local time, had a magnitude of 4.8, as reported by the Geodynamic Institute. It was a shallow earthquake, with an estimated depth of approximately 5 kilometers. Just minutes later, a second and stronger quake of magnitude 5.2 was recorded. Its epicenter was located approximately 2 kilometers east-southeast of Prokopi, also at a shallow depth of about 5 kilometers.
Damage to Homes and Infrastructure
The Mayor of Mantoudi-Agia Anna, Giorgos Tsapourniotis, informed Kathimerini that many houses in Prokopi, located in northern Evia, and Dafnousa, in central Evia, have sustained damage. Furthermore, the island’s road network has been affected by landslides, adding to the challenges faced by residents and authorities.
Authorities Assess and Monitor
Following the seismic activity, authorities have initiated comprehensive assessments of the damage across the affected areas. They are also closely monitoring the ongoing seismic activity to ensure public safety and to provide timely updates to the population. The focus remains on evaluating the full extent of the damage and coordinating response efforts.
Strongly Felt in the Capital
The proximity of Evia to the Greek capital meant that the earthquakes were strongly felt by residents of Athens and the wider Attica region. While no damage has been reported in Athens itself, the tremors caused concern among the populace, highlighting the geological activity of the region.
Previous Seismic Events in the Region
This event follows a pattern of seismic activity in the broader Greek region. Recent reports include a moderately strong quake rattling the island of Hydra, a moderate tremor recorded off Crete, and two strong quakes affecting Skiathos island, one of which was also felt in Athens. These events underscore the need for continued vigilance and preparedness for seismic occurrences in Greece.
Authorities continue to urge residents in affected areas to remain cautious and follow official guidelines. Further updates on the seismic activity and damage assessment are expected as the situation develops.
