Dozens More Migrants Reach Crete, Alarming Athens Amid Rising Flows

Athens, June 2, 2026 – Dozens more migrants were rescued off the southern island of Crete on Monday, June 1, 2026, officials confirmed, as thousands of individuals have arrived this year in small boats from Libya, raising significant alarm among authorities in Athens.

Nearly half of the estimated 10,000 migrants who have illegally entered Greece so far this year by land and sea have originated from the north African country. The remaining arrivals departed from Turkey.

Rescue Operations Off Gavdos and Crete

A total of 143 people were successfully picked up from four boats that encountered difficulties dozens of miles south and southeast of the island of Gavdos, located off Crete’s southern shore. This incident follows a rescue on Sunday, June 1, 2026, where at least 42 men were saved by a merchant ship in the same area. These individuals had departed in a small boat from the Tobruk region in eastern Libya.

Tobruk has emerged as a significant point of departure for individuals from the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, and Africa who are seeking improved living conditions in Europe. These migrants reportedly pay smuggling gangs thousands of euros to be transported to Crete, with the ultimate goal of proceeding north and west towards Europe’s more prosperous regions.

Athens Threatens “Very Harsh” Measures

Following a day last week that saw over 600 arrivals, hardline Migration Minister Thanos Plevris issued a warning, threatening “very harsh” measures against asylum seekers should the heavy migratory flows from Libya persist. However, no specific details regarding these measures were provided.

Greece has made repeated, albeit unsuccessful, attempts to secure cooperation from authorities in the eastern part of Libya. The region has been largely chaotic since the overthrow and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gaddafi in 2011, hindering efforts to control the departure of migrant boats.

Minister Plevris noted that the majority of individuals currently crossing are Bangladeshis and Egyptians, who typically do not meet the criteria for refugee status.

Comparison with Turkish Flows

Despite the challenges with Libya, Plevris highlighted that a similar plea to Turkish authorities has yielded success, resulting in a reduction of approximately 70% in flows across the eastern Aegean. For many years, the short crossing from Turkey’s western littoral to eastern Aegean Sea islands, including Lesvos, Samos, and Kos, was the preferred route for gangs engaged in migrant smuggling into Greece.

During the peak of Europe’s migration crisis in 2015, up to a million people reached Greece from Turkey, with many continuing their journey to other European Union countries.

Ongoing Migration Challenges

This escalating situation underscores the ongoing complexities of migration management in the region. Authorities in Athens are actively seeking solutions to address the increasing number of arrivals and the associated humanitarian and logistical challenges.

The Greek Coast Guard continues its efforts to patrol the waters around Crete and the Aegean, conducting rescue operations to ensure the safety of migrants at sea. However, the sheer volume of arrivals from Libya presents a significant strain on resources and prompts a re-evaluation of current migration policies.

The international community remains engaged, monitoring the situation and calling for collaborative efforts to address the root causes of migration and ensure humane treatment for all individuals seeking asylum or a better life.

Further updates on this developing situation are expected as Greek authorities continue to grapple with the increased migrant flows.
