NEW YORK. The Korakiana Philharmonic Orchestra from Corfu, Greece, garnered enthusiastic applause during its inaugural participation in New York City’s Greek Independence Day celebrations. The orchestra, comprising over 80 musicians led by conductor Kostas Zervopoulos, marked its presence at several key events, culminating in a performance at the grand parade on 5th Avenue.
Historic Participation in Greek Independence Day Celebrations
The orchestra’s engagement began on Friday, April 24, with its participation in the official Greek flag-raising ceremony at Bowling Green in Manhattan. Following this, the musicians were central to other events focused around the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at Ground Zero, where an official doxology was held.
The highlight of their visit was on Sunday, April 26, when the Korakiana Philharmonic Orchestra performed along Manhattan’s 5th Avenue during the large Greek diaspora parade. This event, a traditional culmination of the celebratory activities, saw the orchestra accompanying the Presidential Guard’s Evzones, who, as every year, received the warmest applause. The orchestra subsequently accompanied other marching contingents, further enriching the festive atmosphere.
Distinguished Guests and Cultural Ambassadors
Beyond the thousands of Greek expatriates, the events were attended by prominent figures including Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, senators, and representatives of New York City authorities. The Hellenic Republic was officially represented by the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, accompanied by members of the Greek Parliament. Also present was the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Ioannis Trepeklis, who lauded the Korakiana Philharmonic Orchestra’s participation as an ambassador of the cultural tradition of the Ionian Islands.
The celebrations also featured a traditional dance group from Larissa and a delegation from the Municipality of Messolonghi, as the events coincided with the 200th anniversary of the heroic Exodus of Messolonghi.
A Legacy of Corfiot Music in the USA
It is noteworthy that this marks the fourth occasion a Corfiot Philharmonic Orchestra has visited the United States to grace the diaspora’s events with its musical ensemble. Previous visits include the Corfu Philharmonic Society in 1995 and 2024, and the “Mantzaros” Philharmonic Society in 2019, underscoring a rich tradition of cultural exchange.
