Corfu’s Kapodistrias Museum: A Call for Stable State Support Amidst Neglect

The Kapodistrias Museum, a unique institution dedicated to Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of Greece, is facing an uncertain future despite its immense historical and cultural significance. Located just outside Corfu town in Evropouloi, on the family estate granted by the Kapodistrias family, the museum holds an invaluable collection of historical documents, personal items, artworks, and photographs that chronicle the life and work of this pivotal figure in Greek history. Recognized as a Historic Preserved Monument since 1995, with its surrounding garden also listed among the country’s few historic gardens, the museum’s plight has prompted a parliamentary intervention.

The Argument for Sustained Support

Alexandros Avlonitis, an independent Member of Parliament for Corfu, has formally addressed the Minister of Culture, urging the establishment of concrete measures for the museum’s ongoing financial and substantive support. Avlonitis’s appeal comes at a time when Kapodistrias’s legacy is frequently discussed, yet practical actions to honor his contribution appear to be lagging. The MP argues that while much is said about the great Corfiot who honored his homeland, these words must be accompanied by deeds.

The museum, which operates under the joint administration of three of Greece’s most important cultural institutions (the Anagnostiki Etaireia Kerkyras, the Philharmonic Society of Corfu, and the Society of Corfiot Studies), underwent significant renovation and modernization. This was achieved through a combination of private donations, public funds, and European programs, culminating in its inauguration in 2017 by former President of the Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos. Both the Ionian Islands Region, the state, and the EU contributed financially to its refurbishment, including the permanent exhibition and surrounding area.

A Memorandum of Understanding, Yet Still Struggling

Despite a memorandum of cooperation signed in 2021 with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote Kapodistrias’s personality and support the museum’s operation, Avlonitis highlights that the current reality necessitates a holistic state intervention. He stresses that a stable financial and substantive framework is crucial for this unique historical and cultural institution.

The MP’s concerns are rooted in several observations:

  • The Ministry of Culture’s obligation to act as a valuable ally for Greece’s historical and cultural resources.
  • The Kapodistrias Museum is not ‘just another museum’ but a unique space of historical memory, of supreme archival importance, and an invaluable legacy of a great man.
  • The discrepancy between rhetoric celebrating Kapodistrias and the lack of concrete actions to support his legacy.
  • The looming threat of sustainability issues due to a lack of financial resources and stable institutional support.
  • The broader context of neglect affecting many other historical monuments in Corfu, such as the Achilleion Palace and even the UNESCO-listed Old Town.

The Question Posed to the Minister

Avlonitis’s topical question to the Minister of Culture is direct:
