Corfu, June 4, 2026 – The Ministry of National Economy and Finance has issued a new call for proposals for the ‘Environment and Climate Change 2021-2027’ program, with a total budget of €480,000,000, to support integrated urban waste management across Greece. This highly anticipated development includes securing over €40,000,000 in funding for the Corfu Waste Management Unit, marking a crucial step forward for the island and the wider Ionian region.
Government Commitment to Environmental Protection
The announcement was made by Deputy Minister St. Gikas, who emphasized the government’s strong commitment to advancing projects that protect the environment and improve citizens’ quality of life. For Corfu, the funding and implementation of the Waste Management Unit represent a long-awaited vindication, addressing a critical need that has persisted for many years.
Historical Context and Past Delays
Gikas recalled that 12 years prior, the New Democracy government, in close cooperation with the then-municipal authority led by Giannis Trepeklis, had made significant progress in the tender processes for the construction of the plant through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). However, the subsequent arrival of SYRIZA in government and local administration unfortunately shelved the waste management plant project. In contrast, Ioannina, which was part of the same call for proposals, proceeded with and completed its project in 2017. Gikas highlighted these historical details to underscore recent history.
Overcoming Obstacles and Collaborative Efforts
Recent doubts and concerns regarding the project’s funding have now been dispelled. The Deputy Minister stressed that serious preparation, the collaboration of involved bodies – particularly the Region of Ionian Islands with the Ministry of Environment – and consistent governmental will have proven capable of providing solutions and overcoming obstacles. He extended his gratitude to the Alternate Minister of National Economy and Finance, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, and Secretary General Manolis Grafakos, as well as everyone who worked towards the issuance of this call for proposals.
Future Impact on Corfu
The implementation of the Waste Management Unit is expected to significantly enhance environmental protection and public health on Corfu. This project is vital for sustainable development and will contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for both residents and tourists. The secured funding ensures that the project can move forward, addressing a long-standing environmental challenge for the island.
