Corfu, May 4 – Six days after a serious short circuit and fire incident at the Special Needs Vocational High School (ENEEGYL) in Corfu, the Corfu Teachers’ Union (ELME Corfu) has issued a statement expressing grave concern over the lack of official response and inspection from municipal authorities.
Uninspected Damage and Lingering Concerns
According to the Union’s announcement, no municipal service has yet appeared to inspect the building. The extent of the damage to the internal wiring and other school facilities remains unknown. Students and educators continue to be apprehensive about entering the premises, with the smell of burning still potent. The Union emphasizes that no competent authority, either from education or local government, has officially and in writing responded regarding the school’s operational status or safety.
A School for Special Educational Needs
ELME Corfu highlights that the school caters to students with special educational needs and operates in a building that lacks a fire detection and protection system. Furthermore, 13 classes are reportedly crammed into only 9 classrooms. For the past several days, students and educators have been forced to spend their time in the schoolyard due to these unresolved issues.
“Scandalous and Dangerous” Indifference
The Union describes this indifference as not only scandalous but also dangerous. They criticize the ambiguous statements regarding potential pollution of the area, the school’s operational status, and its safety. They argue that the situation is being handled solely through public relations, with no official written assurance that the building is safe.
Union to Take Action
In response to this perceived inaction, ELME Corfu has announced an intervention at the Central Corfu Municipality on Tuesday, May 7th, at 2 PM, calling on all teachers from the school to attend. They demand an immediate and comprehensive technical and electrical inspection of the facilities, restoration of the area, and the installation of a modern fire detection system. Above all, they demand a safe school environment for the children.
“Their Profits – Our Lives”
The statement concludes with the slogan “Their Profits – Our Lives,” underscoring the Union’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of the school community over any other considerations.
