Corfu, Greece – Seventy new Border Guards were sworn in at the Corfu Police Headquarters on June 2, 2026, out of a total of 86 recruits. This event signifies a crucial advancement for the security and smooth functioning of the police services on the island and at Corfu Airport.
Significant Reinforcement for Corfu’s Security
This intake represents the largest human resource reinforcement received by the Corfu Police Directorate in recent years. These new Border Guards will be deployed to both “Ioannis Kapodistrias” Airport (36 personnel) and other services of the Corfu Police Directorate (50 personnel).
On the occasion of the swearing-in ceremony, Stefanos Gikas, Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy and New Democracy MP for Corfu, stated: “Today marks a significant milestone for Corfu. The swearing-in of the first 70 new Border Guards confirms that a major effort we began over a year ago is yielding tangible results.”
Enhanced Services for Residents and Tourists
Gikas further emphasized, “The reinforcement of the Corfu Police Directorate and ‘Ioannis Kapodistrias’ Airport with new personnel is the largest staffing boost in decades and will substantially contribute to upgrading the security services provided to citizens and the millions of visitors to our island.”
He extended his congratulations to the new Border Guards for their success and wished them health, strength in their training, and a successful career. Gikas also expressed his gratitude to the political leadership of the Ministry of Citizen Protection and Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis for their excellent cooperation and practical response to Corfu’s long-standing demands.
“We speak through deeds and actions, with measurable results that improve the daily lives of citizens and enhance the security of the Regional Unit of Corfu,” Gikas concluded.
Impact on Corfu’s Public Safety
The addition of these new Border Guards is expected to significantly bolster security measures across the island, particularly at the airport, which serves as a major entry point for tourists. The increased presence of trained personnel will contribute to more efficient border control, improved public safety, and a stronger sense of security for both residents and the numerous visitors Corfu welcomes each year.
This initiative addresses a long-standing need for increased staffing within the police force, aiming to alleviate pressure on existing personnel and enhance the overall effectiveness of law enforcement operations. The comprehensive deployment plan ensures that critical areas, such as the airport and various police departments, receive the necessary resources to maintain order and respond to security challenges.
Future Prospects for Security on the Island
The successful recruitment and swearing-in of these Border Guards underscore the government’s commitment to prioritizing security in key tourist destinations like Corfu. This strategic investment in human resources is anticipated to have a lasting positive impact on the island’s infrastructure and its capacity to manage both local needs and the demands of a thriving tourism industry. The ongoing training and integration of these new officers into the existing police framework will be crucial for maximizing their effectiveness and ensuring a seamless transition into their roles.
