Corfu’s Road Network Set for Major Overhaul Within Two Years, Governor Trepeklis Announces

Corfu, January 23 – The Ionian Islands Regional Governor, Yiannis Trepeklis, has announced a comprehensive plan to transform Corfu’s entire road network within the next two years. This ambitious initiative, revealed during a working meeting on Thursday, January 22, 2026, aims to significantly upgrade the island’s infrastructure, addressing critical areas such as road construction, water supply, waste management, and tourism promotion.

The meeting brought together key representatives from Corfu’s productive and tourism sectors, who were briefed on ongoing and planned projects within the Regional Unit of Corfu. Attendees included Yiorgos Mamalos, Deputy Regional Governor for Technical Works & Planning, along with Christos Lavranos (First Vice President of the Corfu Chamber of Commerce), Dimitris Diavatis (President of the Corfu Association of Travel Agents – AOCTA), Kostas Merianos (President of the Corfu Hoteliers Association), Babis Voulgaris (former President and current board member of the Corfu Hoteliers Association), Periklis Katsaros (President of the Federation of Tourist Accommodation Entrepreneurs of Corfu – OETKK), and Sissy Sabbati (President of the Association of Diplomat Tourist Guides of the Ionian Islands & Western Greece).

Ambitious Plans for Infrastructure Development

A key takeaway from the meeting was the shared understanding that the Regional Authority’s comprehensive plan, encompassing a series of significant infrastructure projects for Corfu, is set to fully unfold in the coming period. Governor Trepeklis’s statement that “the image of the entire road network of Corfu will change within the next two years” was met with satisfaction by the representatives of the island’s productive and tourism sectors.

The Regional Governor emphasized the imperative need to upgrade public infrastructure in the Corfu Regional Unit, particularly in South Corfu, which has lacked significant interventions for many years. He outlined several specific projects:

  • Two ongoing construction projects in South Corfu: One focuses on pedestrian walkways, and the other on asphalt paving (in the Vrioni – Moraitika section) along with associated technical works and interventions following recent severe weather events and the damage they caused.
  • Implementation of the Lefkimmi town center regeneration project: This includes lighting, paving, and general beautification.
  • Installation of automatic LED lighting fixtures on the provincial road network: This covers 30 km in the Corfu Regional Unit and a total of 70 km across the entire Ionian Islands Region.
  • Securing government funding for natural disaster restoration projects: These include extensive asphalt paving from Kassiopi to Sidari.
  • Additional funding from the Ionian Islands Regional Development Program (EPA) for road safety projects.
  • Construction of the Kambaniolou, Trion Gefyrion, and Ekati junctions: These projects are now in the final stages of tender document preparation.
  • Similar procedures for the road project in Platitera.

Waste Management and Water Supply Improvements

Mr. Trepeklis also addressed the latest developments in waste management, specifically the construction of the factory in Temploni. He highlighted the signing of agreements for the upgrade of similar units in Kefalonia and Zakynthos, as well as the construction of a new unit in Lefkada. He reiterated that the Ionian Islands, and particularly Corfu, are “turning a new page” and entering a “new era” in waste management, with new infrastructure positioning the Ionian Islands Region as a pioneer nationwide.

The Regional Governor further discussed the critical issue of water supply with the representatives, noting that the Ionian Islands Region has already submitted specific proposals to the government for a definitive and sustainable solution.

Support for Businesses and Tourism Promotion

Finally, Mr. Trepeklis touched upon support for small and medium-sized enterprises, indicating that programs for upgrading existing tourist units (accommodations) will be announced in the immediate future. He also emphasized the tourism promotion of Corfu and the wider Region in international markets. In this regard, the Regional Governor received praise from Babis Voulgaris, representative of the Corfu Hoteliers Association, for the recent event promoting the Ionian Islands in the Spanish market, organized by the Regional Authority in Madrid with the participation of tourism professionals from the Iberian Peninsula.

The meeting concluded with mutual satisfaction regarding the organization, planning, and implementation of interventions by the Ionian Islands Region. The importance of close cooperation among all stakeholders, guided by common interest and maximum effectiveness, was underscored.
