Major Funding Approved for Corfu’s Road Infrastructure
Corfu, January 29 – The Ionian Islands Regional Committee has given its approval for two significant funding proposals aimed at the comprehensive maintenance, upgrade, and restoration of the road network within the Regional Unit of Corfu. The total budget for these strategic interventions amounts to nearly 20 million euros, a move designed to enhance road safety, functionality, and resilience against extreme weather conditions.
Extensive Road Network Maintenance and Upgrades
The first proposal, with a budget of 10,000,000 euros, focuses on extensive maintenance and upgrade projects for Corfu’s road network. This network, characterized by its vastness and historical under-maintenance due to limited resources, faces considerable strain from both increased summer tourist traffic and harsh winter weather phenomena. The Regional Authority has developed mature studies based on technical data and a strict prioritization of needs, aiming for a radical improvement in road safety and network functionality.
The proposed interventions include:
- Improvement and repair of road surfaces.
- Improvement and repair of electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
- Restoration of damaged road infrastructure.
These works will encompass extensive asphalt paving, restoration of technical structures, interventions in street lighting and traffic lights, cleaning and reconstruction of rainwater drainage networks, slope stabilization, and implementation of road safety measures such as guardrails and road markings.
Restoration of Damages from November 2025 Weather Events
Concurrently, the Ionian Islands Regional Committee approved a second proposal for the submission of funding to the “Special Natural Disaster Program – Local Government Infrastructure,” Priority Axis 2.4 “Risk Prevention & Management.” This proposal, titled “Restoration of Damages in the Regional Unit of Corfu from the November 2025 Weather Events,” has a total budget of 9,900,000 euros.
This proposal specifically addresses damages incurred from recent extreme weather and includes:
- Stabilization of road network slopes.
- Replacement of essential small technical structures.
- Stabilization of slopes and restoration of streams in the Municipal Units of Meliteieis & Lefkimmai.
- Restoration of slopes and road surfaces in the Northern Complex.
- Restoration of slopes and road surfaces in Central Corfu.
- Cleaning of streams, restoration of riverbeds, and estuaries.
The Ionian Islands Region demonstrates its commitment by providing concrete plans, technical expertise, and administrative readiness, transforming local community needs into mature funding proposals and tangible infrastructure projects. Through coordinated actions, utilization of every available funding tool, and clear prioritization of road safety and civil protection, the Regional Authority strengthens the Ionian Islands, particularly Corfu, with strategic interventions totaling approximately 20,000,000 euros. This initiative aims to fortify critical infrastructure and support tourism and the daily lives of residents.
