Corfu is abuzz with activity as the island prepares for the solemn and festive events leading up to Easter 2025. The schedule is packed with a blend of religious ceremonies and musical performances by the island’s renowned philharmonic orchestras, promising a rich cultural and spiritual experience for both residents and visitors.

Philharmonic Orchestras in Full Swing

The island’s prestigious philharmonic orchestras are in their final stages of preparation. The ‘Mantzaros’ Philharmonic Society held its dress rehearsal on Holy Thursday, April 18, 2025, a crucial step before their public performances. Similarly, the Old Philharmonic (Palaia Philharmoniki) conducted its final rehearsal on the same day, ensuring a flawless presentation of their Easter repertoire.

Earlier in the week, on Holy Wednesday, April 17, 2025, the Skripero Philharmonic Society captivated audiences with a concert, setting a musical tone for the Holy Week. These performances are a cornerstone of Corfu’s Easter traditions, showcasing the island’s deep musical heritage. The Philharmonic of Korakiana “Spyros Samaras” also held a concert on April 15, 2025, further enriching the pre-Easter cultural offerings.

A Series of Solemn Religious Services

The spiritual aspect of Easter is equally prominent, with numerous religious services scheduled across the island. The Akathist Hymn was broadcast live on April 4, 2025, followed by the Third Salutations to the Theotokos on March 21, 2025, and the Second Salutations to the Virgin Mary on March 15, 2025. The Sunday of Orthodoxy procession of Saint Theodora took place on March 9, 2025, and the First Salutations were broadcast live on March 7, 2025.

Looking back at previous years, the island has consistently observed these traditions. In 2023, the ceremony of the Deposition was broadcast live on Holy Friday, April 14. Holy Wednesday, April 12, 2023, saw the live broadcast of the Service of the Washing of the Feet, and the Service of the Bridegroom was broadcast live on Holy Monday, April 10, 2023. The same service was also observed on April 9, 2023. In 2022, Holy Thursday featured the Service of the Holy Passions on April 21, and the Holy Tuesday Service of the Bridegroom was broadcast live on April 20. The Service of the Washing of the Feet on Holy Wednesday was also broadcast live on April 20, 2022, and the Service of the Bridegroom on Holy Monday was available live on April 18, 2022. Earlier, the Akathist Hymn was broadcast on April 8, 2022, and the Fourth, Third, Second, and First Salutations were broadcast on April 1, March 25, March 18, and March 11, 2022, respectively.

These broadcasts allow a wider audience to participate in the profound spiritual journey of Holy Week, even if they cannot be physically present at the churches.

Cultural and Community Events

Beyond the core Easter preparations, Corfu continues to host various cultural and community events. A concert of religious music by the Municipal Choir of Corfu “San Giacomo” and the Ionian Symphony Orchestra was also a highlight, reflecting the island’s vibrant artistic scene. In 2021, the ‘Mantzaros’ Philharmonic held a concert celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, showcasing their versatility and commitment to historical commemoration.

Moreover, the island’s religious fervor extends beyond Easter, with events such as the live broadcast of the Archieratic Divine Liturgy for the feast of the Miracle of Saint Spyridon on August 11, 2021, and the Archieratic Vespers on August 10, 2021, highlighting the deep devotion of the local community to its patron saint. The Divine Liturgy of Holy Saturday from the Metropolis of Corfu was also broadcast live on May 1, 2021, and the Epitaph Service from the Holy Metropolitan Church of Corfu on April 30, 2021.

These events collectively underscore Corfu’s rich cultural and religious tapestry, especially as it approaches one of the most significant periods in the Orthodox calendar.
