In a move to protect public health and ensure the safety of young people, the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands has issued a strong reminder to all food and beverage businesses regarding the strict enforcement of existing legislation concerning the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages to minors.

Strict Legal Framework for Underage Alcohol Sales

According to current legislation, specifically Article 4, paragraph 1 of Law 3730/2008, as amended by Article 4 of Law 5216/2025, in conjunction with Article 4A, paragraph 1, subparagraph c of Law 3730/2008, as added by Article 10 of Law 5216/2025, the sale and provision of alcoholic beverages to minors is explicitly prohibited. This legal framework underscores the seriousness with which the authorities view the issue of underage drinking and the commitment to safeguarding the younger population.

Penalties for Violators

The Municipality emphasizes that any violations discovered by the competent auditing bodies, primarily the Hellenic Police (EL.AS.), will result in severe penalties as stipulated by law. These penalties include substantial financial fines, suspension of operating licenses, and other administrative sanctions. The aim of these stringent measures is to deter businesses from engaging in practices that could harm minors and to ensure full compliance with the law.

Protecting Public Health and Youth Safety

This renewed focus on enforcing alcohol sales regulations is part of a broader effort by the Municipality to protect public health and ensure the safety of its younger residents and visitors. The consumption of alcohol by minors is associated with various health risks and social problems, and the Municipality is committed to minimizing these risks through vigilant oversight and enforcement.

Collaboration with Law Enforcement

The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands will continue to collaborate closely with the Hellenic Police and other relevant authorities to conduct regular inspections and ensure that all establishments adhere to the legal provisions. This collaborative approach is crucial for effective enforcement and for maintaining a safe environment for young people in Corfu.

A Call for Responsible Business Practices

Businesses operating in the food and beverage sector are urged to review their internal policies and ensure that their staff are fully aware of the legal requirements and the consequences of non-compliance. Responsible business practices are essential not only for avoiding penalties but also for contributing to the well-being of the community.

The Municipality’s announcement serves as a timely reminder that the protection of minors from alcohol consumption is a collective responsibility, requiring the cooperation of businesses, law enforcement, and the community at large.
