Corfu Municipality Issues 32 New Fines for Sanitation Violations
Corfu, April 20 – The Corfu Municipality’s Sanitation and Recycling Department has recently issued thirty-two (32) new fines for violations of the Sanitation Regulations. These penalties address persistent issues such as the illegal disposal of bulky items in public spaces and improper waste management, which continue to raise concerns regarding public respect for the island’s environment and fellow citizens.
The images of large objects being left in public areas, as well as waste being placed outside bins, highlight a troubling lack of adherence to local regulations. The Municipality is reiterating its call for cooperation from all residents and visitors to maintain the dignified image of the island and demonstrate practical respect for the environment and community.
Breakdown of Fines Issued:
- Three (3) fines for placing waste outside bins or for disposing of waste without proper packaging (Article 7.4). Each fine amounts to €100.00 per item, bag, or package.
- Three (3) fines for failing to minimize the volume of all types of waste originating from food service establishments, wholesale businesses, supermarkets, commercial stores, etc. (Articles 13.3 & 13.7.a). Each fine amounts to €400.00 per item, bag, or package.
- Two (2) fines for depositing packaging materials or recyclable materials in mechanical waste collection bins (Article 11). Each fine amounts to €100.00 per item, bag, or package for businesses/shops, and €200.00 per item, bag, or package for hotel units.
- Twenty-four (24) fines for parking vehicles in front of waste bins (Article 7.8). Each fine amounts to €200.00.
The Municipality emphasizes that these measures are crucial for preserving the aesthetic appeal of Corfu and ensuring a clean environment for everyone. The continuous efforts of the Sanitation Department aim to address these challenges and foster a greater sense of responsibility within the community.
The violations underscore an ongoing challenge for the Central Corfu Municipality in its efforts to manage waste effectively and maintain public cleanliness. Despite repeated appeals, the problem of illegal dumping and improper waste disposal persists, leading to these enforcement actions.
The local authorities urge residents and businesses to comply with the regulations, noting that a collective effort is essential for the well-being of the island. The fines are intended not only to penalize offenders but also to deter future violations and promote more responsible waste management practices.
The issue of waste management has been a recurring topic in local discussions, with officials stressing the importance of protecting Corfu’s natural beauty, especially given its status as a popular tourist destination. The Municipality remains committed to implementing and enforcing policies that contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment for all.
