Corfu Municipality Embraces Volunteer ‘Green Corners’ for Enhanced Recycling
The Municipality of Central Corfu has announced encouraging results from its collaboration with volunteer ‘Green Corners’ located in Liapades, Gouvia, Giannades, Pelekas, and Spartilas. This initiative, which began in January 2026, focuses on improving recycling efforts across the island.
How the ‘Green Corners’ Initiative Works
The Municipal Cleaning Service, in coordination with the ‘Green Corners’ managers, is responsible for transporting and depositing various categories of recyclable materials to the Recycling Sorting Center (KDAY) in Temploni.
Key aspects of the program:
- Materials collected are clean, sorted by category, and stored in construction bags.
- Since the start of the collaboration in January 2026, over 160 construction bags (1m³ each) of recyclable materials have been collected and transported.
What Materials are Being Recycled?
The highest percentage of recycled material is PET plastic, specifically PET plastic bottles. This is followed by paper-cardboard, other types of recyclable plastics, glass, aluminum, and metal.
The material collected from the volunteer ‘Green Corners,’ as well as from the Municipal Green Point, is meticulously clean and categorized. This ensures the protection of KDAY employees, who perform checks with their bare hands, and also serves to educate the public on acceptable recyclable materials.
Important Recycling Guidelines for Residents
The Municipality reminds all citizens of the following key guidelines for proper recycling:
- Materials deposited at the Municipal Green Point and volunteer ‘Green Corners’ should be the same as those deposited in the Blue and Yellow recycling bins of the Network.
- Glass should be collected in the Blue bells/containers.
- The disposal of mixed waste in recycling bins is strictly prohibited.
- The disposal of bulky items, demolition materials, and mattresses in public spaces is prohibited.
