Corfu, June 6 – The lush landscape of Mon Repos served as the ideal setting yesterday for a significant environmental event organized by the Central Municipality of Corfu and Diapontia Islands. Held on June 5, 2026, World Environment Day, the initiative aimed to instill ecological consciousness and promote proper waste management among the island’s students.
Educational Initiative at Mon Repos
The event, a collaborative effort between the Central Municipality of Corfu and Diapontia Islands, the Ionian Islands Region, the Regional Directorate of Education of the Ionian Islands, and the Directorate of Primary Education of Corfu, brought together nature and the future generation – the island’s students. Through interactive games and experiential learning, children were introduced to the values of ecological awareness and planetary protection.
The choice of Mon Repos, a beautiful forest area, was deliberate. The idyllic location resonated with children’s voices and laughter, serving as an ideal platform to convey a clear, timely, and resounding message: proper waste management is a matter of culture and survival for our island.
Interactive Stations and Expert Participation
As part of the initiative, specially designed stations featured interactive games and informative sessions with the participation of specialized organizations:
- Hellenic Recycling Utilization Company (EEAA): Provided information on the necessity of recycling, proper waste management, and the importance of the Municipality’s Green Point.
- Forestry Directorate: Offered activities and advice for the protection of our forest environment.
- COREL – GREEN OIL (Used Cooking Oil Recycling Company): Raised awareness about the rational management and recycling of used cooking oils.
High-Level Attendance and Future Commitments
The students were visited by Mayor Stefanos Poulis, accompanied by Deputy Mayors of Cleanliness, Pantelis Giannoulis, and Culture, Nikos Vradis. From the Ionian Islands Region, Governor Giannis Trepeklis and Deputy Governor of Environment Spyros Ioannou were present. Also in attendance were Regional Director of Education Petros Angelopoulos and Director of Primary Education Aristotelis Vlassis.
Given that the issue of waste has plagued the island in recent years, this event is part of a broader effort that constitutes an absolute priority for the Municipality. Through a series of educational student visits to the Green Point for proper waste sorting, which take place throughout the school year, the Municipality continues to steadily invest in cultivating environmental awareness among the ‘citizens of tomorrow’.
The Importance of Environmental Education
The event underscored the critical role of environmental education in fostering a sustainable future. By engaging young minds through interactive and experiential methods, the organizers aimed to create a lasting impact on their understanding of environmental responsibility.
The collaborative nature of the event, involving multiple governmental and educational bodies, highlights a unified approach to addressing environmental challenges in Corfu and the wider Ionian region. This collective effort is crucial for implementing effective waste management strategies and promoting a greener future for the community.
The Municipality’s commitment extends beyond single events, with ongoing educational programs designed to integrate environmental awareness into the regular curriculum. This long-term investment in the younger generation is expected to yield significant benefits in terms of environmental protection and sustainable development for Corfu.
