Corfu Mobilizes Against Ionian Hydrocarbon Exploration Plans

Corfu, June 12, 2026 – The discussion surrounding hydrocarbon extraction in the Northwestern Ionian Sea has entered a new phase, with Corfu now attempting to establish a local front of opposition. An open meeting was held at the Corfu Labor Center on Wednesday, June 10, initiated by the Environmental Protection Association, to coordinate actions against exploration and extraction plans in the region.

The meeting saw participation from citizens, representatives of various associations, and organizations, all of whom expressed significant concern regarding the potential environmental, economic, and social repercussions that extractive activities in the Ionian could entail. It was highlighted that the local economy heavily relies on tourism, fishing, and activities intrinsically linked to the marine environment. This dependence, according to attendees, makes the protection of this environment a critically important issue.

The “Blue Panda” and Renewed Discussions

This mobilization comes at a time when discussions about hydrocarbon extraction in the Ionian Sea are intensifying, underscored by the presence of WWF’s “Blue Panda” in the Mediterranean – a floating symbol of marine protection. The meeting at the Labor Center signifies the initial step in a coordinated effort against these plans, particularly as procedures for exploratory drilling are already underway.

Ongoing Developments in “Block 2”

The meeting took place amidst continuous developments concerning the so-called “Block 2” in the Northwestern Ionian. In April, a contract was signed, paving the way for exploratory drilling. The consortium responsible for the concession is now proceeding with the second phase of its research, with the prospect of conducting the first drill in four decades by 2027.

From Protest to Blocking Plans

According to the Environmental Protection Association, the objective extends beyond merely registering disagreement. The aim is to transition “from simple and harmless protest to blocking every plan for offshore hydrocarbon extraction.” Participants emphasized that this initiative is merely the beginning of a broader campaign of information and mobilization, with the goal of expanding participation across all parts of the island.

“We are not complacent. This was just the beginning, and the continuation must involve even more massive gatherings and mobilizations,” stated the Association in its announcement, stressing that “the protection of the Ionian is everyone’s business.”

Documentary Screening and Public Engagement

As part of the event, the documentary “Water and Oil” was screened, with permission from The Press Project, to whom the organizers publicly extended their gratitude. This screening served to further inform and engage the public on the critical issues at stake.

Journalist George Katsaitis’s Involvement

George Katsaitis, the editor-in-chief of Enimerosi and a veteran journalist since the early 1980s, has been actively covering these developments. Katsaitis, who has collaborated with numerous Athenian newspapers and served as president and general secretary of the Association of Daily Regional Newspapers, believes in the journalist’s role as an honest and selfless mediator, driven by a genuine interest in public affairs.

Community Concerns and Economic Impact

The core of the opposition stems from the profound concerns about the environmental impact on the Ionian Sea, which is a vital resource for Corfu’s tourism and fishing industries. Any potential ecological damage from drilling could have devastating long-term effects on the local economy and the livelihoods of its residents.

Future Actions and Broader Campaign

The Environmental Protection Association has made it clear that this initial meeting is a foundational step. They plan to organize more extensive and widespread mobilizations to ensure that their message reaches every corner of the island and beyond. The sentiment among the participants is that a united front is essential to effectively challenge and ultimately halt the hydrocarbon extraction projects.

The ongoing efforts in Corfu are part of a growing regional awareness and resistance to offshore drilling, reflecting a broader movement to protect the Mediterranean’s delicate ecosystems from industrial exploitation.
