Corfu, March 21 – The Governor of the Ionian Islands, Giannis Trepeklis, has officially signed the inclusion of the ‘Local Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change & Natural Disasters with a Focus on the Old Town of Corfu (PROTEAS)’ into the ‘Ionian Islands 2021-27’ Program. This significant initiative, with a budget of 2,952,274.40 euros, aims to enhance the resilience of Corfu’s Old Town against natural hazards and the impacts of climate change.

Comprehensive Operational Planning for Risk Reduction

The ‘PROTEAS’ project is an integral part of the Integrated Local Strategy for Sustainable Urban Development of Corfu (OSVAAK). Its primary objective is to formulate a comprehensive Operational Plan for Reducing Risk from Natural Hazards and Adapting to the Climate Crisis within the city of Corfu, specifically focusing on the Old Town area, which falls under the Municipality of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands.

Through this project, specialized plans for the prevention and management of natural hazards will be developed. These plans will meticulously consider the unique geodynamic, urban, and cultural/building conditions of the area, as well as the potential impacts of the ongoing climate crisis.

Key Components of the Project

The physical scope of the ‘PROTEAS’ project encompasses several crucial aspects:

  • Analysis and Assessment of Natural Hazards: This includes earthquakes, floods, fires, extreme temperatures, and their combined effects, utilizing advanced scientific methodologies and GIS tools.
  • Vulnerability Assessment: Evaluation of the vulnerability of buildings, critical infrastructure, and networks to formulate proposals for improving their resilience.
  • Specialized Operational Plans: Development of comprehensive risk management plans for the Old Town of Corfu, including emergency response protocols.
  • Innovative Digital Information and Prevention System: Creation of a digital system to provide data on natural hazards and support decision-making processes for relevant authorities and citizens.
  • Training and Public Awareness: Educational and awareness-raising activities, training seminars, and simulation exercises to prepare the general population and stakeholders for emergency situations.
  • Large-Scale Operational Exercise: Planning and implementation of a full-scale operational exercise to effectively manage natural disasters in the area of interest.
  • Capacity Building: Enhancement of the capabilities (human resources and equipment) of the Civil Protection system of the Municipality of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands, as well as other relevant bodies such as DIADEYA and the Fire Department.

Boosting Resilience and Cultural Preservation

The fundamental goals of the ‘PROTEAS’ project are multifaceted:

  • Increased Resilience: Strengthening the resilience of the Old Town of Corfu and the wider city against natural hazards and climate impacts.
  • Cultural Heritage Protection: Safeguarding the cultural (building) heritage and critical infrastructure through targeted interventions.
  • Modern Risk Management Plan: Developing a modern, scientifically sound risk management plan that will be integrated into the Municipality’s civil protection strategy.
  • Enhanced Preparedness: Improving the readiness and knowledge of local authorities, professionals, and citizens for the prevention of and effective response to catastrophic events.

This project is expected to make a decisive contribution to the sustainability, safety, and cultural preservation of the Old Town and the city of Corfu. It will significantly bolster the region’s strategic adaptation to the new challenges posed by the climate crisis and natural disasters.
