Corfu Doctors’ Union Takes Stand Against ‘Trial by Media’ in Assault Allegation
The Corfu Hospital Doctors’ Union (EGESYK) has unequivocally stated its position regarding the recent allegation by a 20-year-old woman, who claims she was assaulted by a doctor from the hospital. The union’s statement, released to the public, not only addresses the serious nature of the accusation but also sharply criticizes the manner in which the incident has been handled by certain media outlets.
Unwavering Principles: No Cover-Up, No Public Shaming
EGESYK’s announcement begins with a clear and non-negotiable stance: “As EGESYK, we feel obliged to take an absolutely clear position on the incident that occupies the public sphere – and especially on the vulgar way in which it was attempted to be presented and ‘judged’ on television screens.” The union asserts that it will not cover for any doctor or colleague if a disciplinary or criminal offense is proven. “Violence is not a ‘moment,’ it is not a ‘misunderstanding,’ and it will never be tolerated,” the statement reads, emphasizing that the investigation belongs to the competent institutions and that facts will be judged based on evidence and proper procedures, not on rumors and sensationalized television cries.
However, the union is equally adamant in its declaration that it will not allow the public shaming of a colleague through a ‘popular court’ format, particularly by shows that have transformed into ‘tele-courts.’ EGESYK highlights the lack of rules, balance, presumption of innocence, and respect for individuals and institutions in such media portrayals. “Justice is not administered by presenters, panel ‘experts,’ and edited excerpts. It is administered by Justice,” the union firmly states.
‘Tele-Cannibalism’ vs. Responsible Journalism
The union goes on to lambast the ‘journalistic’ management observed, describing it not as an investigation but as “tele-cannibalism.” They point out the absence of serious cross-referencing, substantial documentation, or any attempt to illuminate all sides of the story. Instead, they observed only “easy labels, ‘gallows’ in the air, and screaming headlines.” EGESYK openly admits that they did not expect anything different from specific ‘tele-pollution’ shows that thrive on defamation and sensationalism.
A Colleague’s Character and Corfu’s Memory
Regarding the targeted doctor, EGESYK offers a staunch defense of his professional conduct, stating that he has given no cause for concern throughout his career. “He is one of the most beloved and hardworking in the hospital, with a daily contribution known to his patients, their companions, and his colleagues,” the union asserts. They commend the doctor for his ethical and responsible conduct, noting that he did not hide, deny the allegations, or shy away from public statements, instead requesting that all data be examined.
Finally, the union concludes with a discreet yet pointed reminder to those who currently act as incorruptible judges: “the society of Corfu has memory.” They recall past instances in Corfu where ‘revealers’ and ‘guardians of morality’ have moved from public spotlight to ethical cases. EGESYK declares that it will not be an accomplice to either cover-up or public shaming.
This statement from the Corfu Hospital Doctors’ Union underscores a growing concern about the role of media in legal and ethical matters, advocating for due process and caution against premature judgment in the court of public opinion.
