Corfu Delegation’s US Visit Celebrated by Pan-Corfiot Society

Corfu, May 20 – A gathering of prominent members of the Corfiot community and the Pan-Corfiot Society of America took place this morning at SIM’S cafe, owned by Spyros Simatis. The meeting celebrated the recent, highly successful visit of the ‘Spiros Samaras’ Philharmonic of Korakiana to New York for the Greek Independence Day parade.

Among those present were Procopios Zervas, former Vice President of the Pan-Corfiot Society of America, John Doukakis, Honorary President of the Society, and Corfiot journalist Dionysis Mamalos, who played a crucial role in coordinating the Philharmonic’s presence at various diaspora events.

A Resounding Success in New York

The informal discussion centered on the Philharmonic’s appearance at the 5th Avenue parade in Manhattan. All attendees expressed their absolute satisfaction with the overwhelmingly positive reception of the musical ensemble in the United States.

The Philharmonic’s performance garnered enthusiastic praise from Archbishop of America, who commended the musicians’ high standards. Lou Katsos, President of the Parade Committee, also highlighted the impeccable presentation of the musical body. Thousands of Greeks from the diaspora lined the streets of New York, welcoming the ensemble with immense enthusiasm and visible emotion.

Special recognition was given to Dionysis Mamalos for his comprehensive and demanding coordination of the Philharmonic’s participation in all diaspora events.

Acknowledgements and Future Hopes

Warm congratulations were also extended to Christos Manesis, President of the Pan-Corfiot Society, and the members of the Board of Directors for their meticulous preparation. Theodoros Doukakis, former President of the Society, was also acknowledged for his long-standing contribution and support.

The overall assessment of the initiative was overwhelmingly positive, as Corfu successfully showcased its rich cultural heritage at one of the most significant diaspora events globally. The meeting concluded with a collective commitment and hope that this dynamic presence of Corfu in New York would be repeated next year.

The event underscores the strong ties between Corfu and its diaspora, and the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening these bonds.
