Corfu Construction Workers Union Intervenes Over Exploitation of Chinese Laborers
Corfu, February 7 – The Corfu Construction Workers Union has intensified its efforts to combat the exploitation of Chinese migrant workers on the island. Following previous revelations, the union conducted another intervention at a site where employers have reportedly housed these workers, sending a clear message: “Greek and foreign workers, united against exploitation.”
The union’s latest action involved distributing a special statement translated into English and Chinese to ensure their message of class solidarity reached every worker directly. This move aims to break the isolation and fear that employers allegedly impose on these vulnerable laborers.
Deplorable Conditions Uncovered
The union first brought to light the inhumane conditions under which these workers live just a few days ago. They are reportedly crammed into unsuitable buildings in the Barbati area of Corfu, lacking basic hygiene and safety standards. The union describes this situation as extreme employer impunity, akin to modern-day slave trade.
During direct discussions and the distribution of their statement, the Corfu builders emphasized to the Chinese workers that their only protection lies in organizing within the union. They informed them about the sector’s achievements, such as a minimum daily wage of 40 euros for a 7-hour, 5-day work week. The union stressed that these rights were not granted by any government or employer but were won through arduous struggles.
Demands for Decent Housing and Rights
The union vehemently condemned the fact that workers are forced to reside in spaces not intended for human habitation. They made it clear that the fight for decent housing in proper homes is a common struggle for all workers, regardless of nationality. The slogan “Our union is yours too” resonated, urging migrants to join their ranks and fight alongside Greek builders for work and life with rights.
In addition to their on-site presence, the Corfu Construction Workers Union has formally held all relevant state authorities accountable. They have submitted requests to all competent government agencies, demanding immediate inspections to address both the appalling living conditions and ensure compliance with safety measures and collective bargaining agreements.
This action represents the only response to exploitation, proving that class solidarity knows no borders and that united, workers have the power to enforce their rights.
