Corfu, Greece – A significant long-standing issue for Corfu has been definitively resolved with the parliamentary ratification of Ministerial Amendment 426/107/08.12.2025 by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance. This amendment officially confirms the concession of the use, management, and exploitation of Corfu’s coastal front to the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands.
Deputy Minister Gkikas Highlights Government’s Commitment
Stefanos Gkikas, Deputy Minister of Shipping & Insular Policy and New Democracy MP for Corfu, emphasized the importance of this development. “After a multi-year and persistent effort, a major outstanding issue for Corfu is definitively closed,” Gkikas stated.
The concession involves a substantial area of 12,265.17 square meters that has been declassified from the land zone of Corfu Port. This area includes the stretch from Cafe-Gyali to the moat of the Old Fortress, as well as the section from Anemomylos to the facilities of NAOK in Garitsa Bay.
Public Interest at the Forefront
The concession is being granted free of charge by the Greek State to the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands. It is explicitly stipulated that the concession is for reasons of public interest, and further commercial assignment to third parties is prohibited, with the exception of existing contracts. This ensures that the area will be utilized exclusively for the benefit of the citizens and the local community.
Gkikas extended his gratitude to Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of National Economy and Finance, and Georgios Mylonakis, Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Director of his office, for their acceptance and promotion of this rightful request and for their consistent and constructive cooperation.
New Democracy Government Delivers on Promises
“The New Democracy Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, proves once again that it honors its commitments to citizens and solves long-standing problems with actions, not words,” Gkikas added. He expressed confidence that this concession will be utilized in a way that will enhance the quality of life for Corfiots and restore to Corfu an area it deserves.
“We continue with a plan, reliability, and tangible results,” Gkikas concluded, underscoring the government’s dedication to regional development and addressing local needs.
This move is expected to pave the way for strategic redevelopment and improved public access to significant parts of Corfu’s coastline, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of these areas for residents and visitors alike.
The specific details of the municipal plans for the newly acquired coastal areas are anticipated to be announced by the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands in the coming months.
