Corfu, Greece – November 18, 2025 – The coastal front of Corfu, with the exception of the NAOK (Nautical Athletic Club of Corfu) facilities, is being conceded to the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands. This development is part of a new bill from the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, which has been submitted for public consultation. The issue of the NAOK facilities remains pending for a subsequent concession.
New Bill Paves Way for Coastal Concession
The provision for the concession of the Corfu Coastal Front is included in the Ministry of National Economy and Finance’s bill titled: ‘FRAMEWORK FOR PUBLIC WELFARE PROPERTIES, FOUNDATIONS, ESCHEATED INHERITANCES AND DONATIONS TO THE STATE – INTERVENTIONS IN INCOME TAX, PROPERTY AND VAT CODES – ESTABLISHMENT, MISSION AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRIVATE LAW LEGAL ENTITY NAMED ‘COMMITTEE OF OLYMPIANS AND ZAPPEION LEGACY’ – PROVISIONS OF THE GENERAL SECRETARIAT OF THE FINANCIAL SECTOR AND PRIVATE DEBT MANAGEMENT AND OTHER PROVISIONS.’
Deputy Minister Highlights Significance
In his statements, Deputy Minister of Shipping, St. Gikas, emphasized the significance of this decision: “After several efforts, the Coastal Front, excluding NAOK, is being conceded free of charge to the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands.”
He further added: “I would also like to emphasize that we are processing a new provision for the concession of the NAOK nautical sports facilities – once their legalization is completed – directly to NAOK, in accordance with an existing provision of the law. I believe this is something that the local community desires for this historic club.”
Background and Future Plans for NAOK
The concession of the coastal front marks a significant step for the local administration, granting them greater control and responsibility over this vital area. The exclusion of NAOK facilities in the initial concession indicates a separate, more complex process due to legal and regulatory requirements concerning their legalization.
The Deputy Minister’s assurance that a new provision is being worked on specifically for NAOK suggests that the government is committed to ensuring the club’s future and its continued contribution to the local community. The legalization process for the nautical sports facilities is a prerequisite before their direct concession to NAOK can be finalized.
Local Community’s Expectations
The local community of Corfu has long expressed a desire for clarity and resolution regarding the management and ownership of the coastal front and the NAOK facilities. This move is expected to be met with positive reactions, as it addresses a long-standing issue and paves the way for further development and improved management of these important public spaces.
The concession of the coastal front to the municipality is anticipated to enable more effective planning and implementation of projects aimed at enhancing the area for both residents and tourists. The eventual concession of the NAOK facilities directly to the club is also seen as crucial for the preservation and development of nautical sports in Corfu.
