The Corfu Carnival is a unique experience that combines history, tradition, and the joy of life, offering visitors the opportunity to become part of an authentic celebration. In Corfu, the Carnival takes on two distinct forms, providing a rich and multifaceted experience worth living.

The Venetian Carnival: Aristocratic Elegance and Romance

Inspired by the era of Venetian rule, the Venetian Carnival revives Corfu’s splendor as a cultural crossroads. Grand baroque costumes, elaborate masks, and romantic dances, such as waltzes and quadrilles, transform the Old Town into a scene from another era. During the events, clubs and residents of Corfu parade through the picturesque ‘kantounia’ and Liston Square, offering a captivating spectacle for visitors. Classic baroque dances are presented at selected locations, creating an atmospheric setting that invites the public to take photos and experience the magic of the past.

The Folk Carnival: Satire, Tradition, and Vibrancy

In parallel, the Folk Carnival, known as ‘Apokries’ in the Corfiot dialect, draws its roots from ancient Greek Dionysian festivals and has evolved into a celebration of joy, satire, and social commentary. The central figure is Sior Karnavalos, who parades with his float in a colorful procession full of laughter and song. The culmination of the celebration comes on Tyrini Sunday, when Sior Karnavalos reads his satirical will and is burned at Spianada, symbolizing rebirth and the cyclical nature of life.

Today’s Program Highlights:

  • 11:30 AM: ‘Peratzada’ with period costumes in the Historic Center (Evgeniou Voulgareos, Annunziata, Liston, Palaces).
  • 11:30 AM: Corfiot Masquerade ‘Peratzada’ in the Historic Center (Evgeniou Voulgareos, Annunziata, Liston, Palaces).
