Corfu Builders’ Union Continues Fight for Chinese Migrant Workers’ Rights
Corfu, February 5 – The Corfu Builders’ Union has escalated its actions concerning the dire living and working conditions faced by dozens of Chinese migrant workers on the island. In a new, militant intervention at the site where employers have reportedly crammed the workers, the Union sent a clear message: “Greek and foreign workers, united against exploitation.”
The Union has consistently brought to light the inhumane conditions under which these workers live. They are reportedly housed in unsuitable buildings in the Barbati area of Corfu, lacking basic hygiene and safety standards. The Union describes these conditions as a form of modern slavery, highlighting the exploitation by employers.
Direct Communication and Call for Unity
In a significant move to break the isolation and fear imposed by employers, the Union distributed a special edition of its announcement, translated into English and Chinese. This ensured that the call for class solidarity reached every worker directly. Through lively discussions and the distribution of this announcement, the Corfu builders made it clear to their Chinese counterparts that their only shield is organization within the Union.
They informed the workers about the sector’s achievements, such as the minimum daily wage of 40 euros for a 7-hour, 5-day work week. They emphasized that these rights were not granted by any government or employer but were won through hard struggles.
Demands for Decent Housing and Rights
The Union vehemently condemned the fact that workers are forced to live in spaces not intended for human habitation. They clarified that the fight for decent housing in proper homes is a common struggle for all workers, regardless of nationality. “Our union is also yours,” was the prevailing slogan, inviting migrants to join its ranks and fight alongside Greek builders for work and life with rights.
Official Demands to State Authorities
In parallel with its presence at the workers’ living and working sites, the Corfu Builders’ Union has also held all relevant state authorities accountable. Through requests submitted to all competent state authorities, the Union demands immediate inspections regarding both the deplorable living conditions and compliance with safety measures and collective agreements.
This action represents the only response to exploitation, proving that class solidarity knows no borders and that workers, united, have the power to enforce their rights.
The Union’s continued efforts underscore a broader struggle against worker exploitation, emphasizing the importance of organized labor in securing fundamental rights and dignified working conditions for all, irrespective of origin.
