Corfu Braces for Strong Winds and Extremely Low Temperatures

After a week of intense and continuously changing weather patterns, the unstable weather is set to continue this weekend in Corfu. Successive barometric lows originating from the Atlantic Ocean are moving towards Europe, bringing with them strong winds, rainfall, and snow. These systems are also contributing to the formation of new barometric lows, or cyclones, in the Balkan region and northern Italy.

Cold Air Masses and Barometric Lows Intensify Weather

This weather phenomenon is largely due to cold air masses from Scandinavia combining with warmer air masses from the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa, which together intensify the severe weather conditions. Low temperatures are expected to persist until Wednesday. In addition to the barometric lows that have affected the region over the past week, anticyclonic systems are forecast to appear from Monday to Wednesday, originating from North Africa and Europe. However, these systems will not bring warmer air masses to Greece.

Weekend Weather Outlook for Corfu

Let’s examine the detailed weather forecast for the weekend, according to the latest predictive data:

  • Saturday: A barometric low is expected to pass over, bringing unstable weather to Corfu. Intermittent rainfall is anticipated throughout the day, with winds shifting to westerly-southwesterly, reaching up to 8 Beaufort. The maximum temperature will be around 13°C, with a minimum of 6°C. Humidity will be moderate during the day, reaching up to 95% at night.
  • Sunday: Sunny spells with some cloudiness are expected in the morning, followed by clear skies. Winds will change to northerly, then northwesterly, with gusts reaching up to 6 Beaufort in Corfu and 7 Beaufort in the northwestern parts of the island by the afternoon, gradually weakening by nightfall. The maximum temperature will be around 10°C, with a minimum of 4-5°C. Humidity will be low throughout the day and night, not exceeding 50%.

Arctic Chill to Grip Corfu Next Week

By Monday, high barometric pressure systems will influence the region, bringing sunshine with northerly-northwesterly winds reaching up to 7 Beaufort across the island. As the day progresses, winds will subside to 4-5 Beaufort. This will contribute to the persistence of low temperatures, with the maximum temperature not exceeding 8°C by midday, and the minimum dropping to 0°C. In areas of the island further from the sea and at higher altitudes, temperatures could even reach -3°C. Furthermore, the presence of northerly winds and generally cold weather conditions across Greece and other European countries will intensify the perceived cold. Humidity will remain exceptionally low day and night.

Residents are advised to take precautions against the strong winds and cold temperatures. These conditions could potentially impact daily life and transportation across the island. Local authorities have not yet issued specific warnings, but residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates closely.

This significant change in weather patterns follows a period of mild conditions, and the sudden drop in temperature is a cause for concern for some residents, particularly the elderly and those with health conditions.
