Corfu: Nikos Parginos’s New Historical Novel, ‘The Last Execution,’ Explores Civil War Executions
Corfu, April 3, 2026 – In the coming days, the new historical novel by Corfu author Nikos Parginos, titled ‘The Last Execution,’ is expected to be released by ‘Graphi’ publications. This book serves as a poignant reference to the executions carried out on Lazaretto Island during the Greek Civil War.
‘The Last Execution’ marks Parginos’s tenth book, commemorating 20 years of his literary career. It is described as a historical journey into the heroism of the National Resistance fighters.
Book Summary: A Glimpse into the Past
The novel’s synopsis transports readers to 1949, amidst the shadow of the civil war that gripped Greece. Lefteris Papazoglou finds himself imprisoned in Corfu’s jails, awaiting an execution that has long been decided. Only a few hours remain until dawn, when he, like dozens of other National Resistance fighters, will be led to Lazaretto, the small island just outside Corfu, to face the firing squad. Alone in the dark cell of ‘Golgotha’ on that final night, he is forced to confront his past, the shadows and ghosts of the path he followed, staring death in the face.
Papazoglou battled everyone: foreigners and locals, neighbors, fellow villagers, relatives, and siblings. Now, in his final struggle, he must contend with himself in an even more intense, internal civil war, dividing his ‘being,’ his ‘wants’ and ‘shoulds,’ his hopes and dreams for life and love, with the ideals, values, and beliefs he served through his struggle. With a statement of repentance, he could avoid death and live the absolute love that holds him captive to life and yet sets him free.
Thirty years later, in 1978, the secret of that particular conflict, of the last execution on the martyred wall of Lazaretto, will be revealed during the first visit – a pilgrimage to the inviolable island.
Author’s Milestone: 20 Years of Literary Contribution
Nikos Parginos, a respected figure in Corfu’s literary scene, celebrates two decades of dedicated writing with the release of ‘The Last Execution.’ His previous works have often explored historical themes, offering readers a deeper understanding of Greece’s past. This latest work continues his tradition of shedding light on significant historical events and the human experiences within them.
The Significance of Lazaretto Island
Lazaretto Island, a small landmass off the coast of Corfu, holds a somber place in Greek history. During the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), it served as a place of execution for many involved in the conflict. Parginos’s novel aims to bring these untold stories to the forefront, ensuring that the sacrifices and struggles of those times are not forgotten.
Anticipation for the Release
The release of ‘The Last Execution’ is highly anticipated by literary enthusiasts and those interested in Greek history. The book promises to be a powerful and moving account, offering both historical insight and a deeply personal narrative. Readers can expect a compelling exploration of themes such as sacrifice, love, and the enduring human spirit amidst profound conflict.
As the book makes its way to bookstores across the country, it is expected to spark discussions and further interest in the often-overlooked aspects of the Greek Civil War and its impact on individuals and communities.
