Corfu Associations Intervene on Noise Pollution and Illegal Public Space Occupation in Old Town
Corfu, April 5, 2026 – The Inter-Association Committee of Cultural and Environmental Associations of Corfu has once again forcefully brought to the forefront the serious problems of noise pollution and the occupation of public spaces in the historic city center, especially with the new tourist season approaching.
In a joint letter dated March 31, 2026, addressed to the Mayor of Central Corfu, the President of the Municipal Council, relevant Deputy Mayors, leaders of municipal factions, and the Corfu Police Directorate, the associations express their deep concern regarding the repeated violation of legislation.
As they point out, catering establishments, mainly in the heart of the Old Town, systematically exceed permitted music intensity limits and operating hours. Simultaneously, there is an uncontrolled expansion of tables and chairs into public spaces, even in areas where no such activity previously existed.
The Committee demands from the municipal authority what it characterizes as the self-evident enforcement of regulations and terms that it itself establishes through licensing. It is emphasized that the responsibility for control cannot be shifted to residents through complaints or digital platforms, nor can it be postponed to the future with the invocation of creating a municipal police force.
Particular emphasis is placed on the issue of safety, as the chaotic placement of tables and chairs hinders the access of emergency vehicles, creating serious risks for human lives and property. Furthermore, the daily burden on the quality of life for both permanent residents and visitors to the city is highlighted.
The initiative is co-signed by seven cultural and environmental associations of Corfu, including the San Giacomo Cultural Association, the Corfu Environmental Protection Association, and the Association of Permanent Residents of the Old Town, demonstrating the widespread concern of the local community about the prevailing situation.
This intervention comes at a time when tourist activity is expected to peak, bringing to the forefront the need for a balance between economic development and the protection of the daily life and character of the city.
